Kids playing knock-a-door-run

I certainly never did it as a child and my parents wouldn't have viewed it as harmless fun if I had.
It's particularly unwelcome for me with a dog who'll bark and a shift working OH.
'Smile for the Camera' signs aren't a deterrent - there'll just stand there looking at the house to try to locate the cameras.
The see you next Tuesday tactic worked for me.0 -
Knock down ginger in Herts too!
I wonder where all the variations came from? Fascinating.0 -
Knock down ginger for me too. Its weird isn't it, when I did this as a kid I had no idea it could be distressing to people.. I think a sign might work, or one just saying "I know who you are" heh heh.0

We just used to call it "knock-door-run" in Derby. We never thought it was going to cause distress, we just did it as a wind up. But then again we didn't play it that often, our favourite game was taking the keys to my friend's dad's old fiesta they had round the back and pressing the hornOur Rainbow Twins born 17th April 2016

We used to call it knocky eye doors in Cumbria. Although I'm not sure if it's regional on not because there's a letter in our local paper this week about it happening, and the kids seem to be mainly targeting elderly folk....which I think is disgusting. The guy who wrote the letter calls it Nicky knocky nine doors.0 -
As a postie I was delivering on an estate one summer during the school holidays.. I had a packet for one house so knocked on the door only for a bloke to throw a bucket of (what I hope was) water on me from an upstairs window, the window was directly above the front door so he couldn't actually see who was stood at his front door.
The horrified/embarrassed look on his face when I took a step back and he saw me was priceless! He was full of apologies, telling me he works nights and the local little s****s have been waking him up all week playing knock-a-door run.
At least it was a hot day!0 -
Years ago in York. i was walking down the street and someone very small asked me to ring the bell of a house as apparently they couldn't reach.
Next thing i knew they had scarpered and left me standing at the door looking like a lemon."if the state cannot find within itself a place for those who peacefully refuse to worship at its temples, then it’s the state that’s become extreme".Revd Dr Giles Fraser on Radio 4 20170 -
A really clever child, like me and a couple friends around 13 years old
, went to the shop at the top of the road and bought some black thread, a hell of a lot of it in one reel, sneak up to doors and tide one end to the knock handle, and you can get SO far away with the thread and its impossible to see on a dark evening, hide behind cars and pull away, we did this in a pretty rough area so it got a bit scary after a few people starting yelling into the street they just couldn't see us.
Good times. Oh and yeah OP just don't bother answering the door for the next week or so. Problem solved.0 -
Well just as an update, as my wife and I were walking from the car to the house yesterday evening the kids were out playing on the street. One of them quite loudly asked the others "Who wants to play knock-a-door-run?"
I very politely requested that they not do it on our door again, and pointed out they shouldn't really be doing it to anyone. They looked a bit sheepish and just said "OK". They didn't do it on our door last night so we'll see if it did the trick.
They just don't seem the brightest - to play it on a house directly opposite where you live is bad enough but to then state loudly you are going to do it seems doubly stupid!0
