I found kumho KU39 to be better in the wet and snow than uniroyal rainsports, cheaper too!0

They are not a luxury.
Because (as yet) only a minority of people have true winter tyres is why the roads are chaotic when we get frost or snow.
Cue a horde of posts from folks who will say:
They don't need them.
or
They manage fine without them.
or
We don't have enough snow in the UK.
or
They are too expensive.
or
They have nowhere to keep an extra set of wheels.
or
They like sliding all over the place - kerbing their wheels and causing accidents.
or

I don't think I've ever seen anybody say that they've tried 'em and found them no improvement.
Absolutely agree - I'm sure the folks who say they are not needed are those who have no concept at all of the grip that true winter tyres give in all conditions when the temperature is low.
By winter tyres I mean the ones with the Mountain & Snowflake symbol in addition to the M+S markings - as opposed to having only M+S markings which are usually more knobbly and noisy, although they are great for off-road, lanes, and farm tracks.
Compared to winter tyres, M+S are not actually that great in snow.
After I discovered what my RWD BMW could do when fitted with winter tyres, I sold the LandRover we had as a 2nd vehicle, which up till then I had always considered essential to getting to work without fail in the winter.
Having only the one vehicle with 2 sets of wheels is a huge saving.
Unlike some folks on here who seem to have a whole range of vehicles for different occasions (like E92 M3s, Lexus-Toyotas, and Yarises etc.etc.) now that I'm retired I want to have one vehicle that can do everything I need.
Discovering just how good winter tyres are has saved us a whole load of cash.
If someone seriously can't afford or store a 2nd set of wheels I would suggest having only one set - with winter tyres - purely on safety grounds.
Running winters in the summer is nothing like the problem some folks seem to imply - the rate of wear is only slightly higher than summer tyres and would be compensated for by having only the one set.
The majority of people would not notice the marginal reduction in grip which would only be evident when driving at the extreme limit of their car's cornering ability in the dry.
In many Central-European countries when winter tyres are mandatory in the winter months, many folks just don't bother with changing to summer tyres at all.0 -

I do as do many others on here, after the six weeks of freezing temperatures we had a few years ago where many struggled to use there cars many went for winters to make things a bit safer
I bought a second hand set of wheels off e bay and fitted them with four dunlop winter sport 4D which cope much better in the cold and the snow

cost about £400.00 for the second hand wheels and four new winter tyres but they will last as long as i keep my car and then they will go on e bay for some money back when the car has gone, come march then i put my summer rubber back on which is continental premium contact 5 not cheap at £80.00 a corner fitted but a very good tyre0 -

Most "budget" (off-brand teflon/concrete cheapy ditchfinders) are M+S marked. All it means is that there's a certain ratio of groove-to-tread-block, and grooves are open the full width of the tread. that is the tyre that i use as my winter tyres not that size but they are winter sport 4D which i believe are a full winter tyre and the mountain and snowflake that shows on the label are also on the tyres
the other ones i considered were the TS850 Continental Winter Contact but the dunlops won on price being nearly £100.00 cheaper for the four fitted as my supplier had them in stock and on offer so a set of four 205 55 16 cost £300.00 fitted and wheels came for just under £100.00
best £400.00 i ever spent car is so much better in the winter now, last year we didnt have any snow to talk of but on the cold icy mornings they never missed a beat, traction control light came on a few times but the tyres soon found grip0 -

if you do want winter tyres as ice say now is the time to get them because as winter draws nearer demand goes up prices go up and stocks disappear quickly0
