2. You can declare SORN whenever you like, but it's a point in time thing - as soon as you declare it, you're SORNed. You can't tell DVLA 'I'm going to take the car off the road on the 12th, just bear with me until then'.By post
Send your SORN application (form V890) to DVLA. You can make a SORN up to 2 calendar months in advance by post, but if you’re doing it this far in advance include a letter explaining why.

Interesting. I was under the impression that SORN in advance was only available if you were going to be abroad on expiry of VED or existing SORN, but not if you were in-country.
Clearly I was incorrect, sorry for misleading earlier post!0 -
Do we have to wait until the 1st of the month to tax our cars now ?
We used to be able to tax them two or so days before the end of the month for it to start the following month.
I just tried to tax my new car to start from 1st November but it wants to start it from 1st October...it's the 29th today so don't want to pay the whole month0 -
I taxed my car on line for 1st November two weeks ago. The web site will assume continuous cover which is the law now so I assume you are not currently taxed !You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0

I want to swing my VED round by six months as taxing, servicing and MOTing the car at this time of year is a bit of a burden with Christmas approaching. When I went to pay I was presented with the following options:How would you prefer to pay?
Payment card
6 Months at £112.75
12 Months at £205.00
Direct Debit
Monthly (approximately £17.94 per month) totalling £215.25
6 months (one off payment) at £107.63
12 months (one off payment) at £205.000 -

Hi,
I bought a car today don't knowing the new system weak points. I would like to pay road tax online but it looks like because 3 days left from December then I'll lose almost a full month payment.
My question is, can I wait 3 more days, keep my car in my sideways (private property) and pay for tax just on 1st of Jan? Or will I get any penalty to not taxed same day of purchase?0 -
SORN it now.
Tax it in January. BUT don't put it on the road before then. It goes on the road in December, it needs to be taxed for December.0 -
I agree with AdrianC.
If you bought it today -SORN it right now before midnight.
Then tax it in January.0
