Well, I imagine that maybe the police cannot check it either.

But I certainly would not like to be a person taking that gamble.
  • Wohoooooooo.

Got through to the automated DLVA phone system but now "all our operators are busy so please try again later"

Could not find an alternative number, only the old 0870 and the new 0300.

Ah well its getting there. (I hope)!

    Yipee for Post Office.
Log book came today with our super post lady.
Went to the local Post Office and:
No problem paid the £30.00 and now can legally drive the car again.
    Well done Post Office.
    Now DVLA?
    Mmmmm
    Good luck.

The information released hasn't answered my own circumstances... I have a disc that expires in February, but I want to cancel it at the end of November and declare a SORN. So:
    1) How does my refund occur when I didn't buy the tax under the new system, and
    2) Can I declare a SORN in advance or do I have to wait until the night before I need it to take effect?

    1. It just 'does'. Computer recognises VRN, looks at expiration date, calculates refund, prints and posts cheque.
    2. You can declare SORN whenever you like, but it's a point in time thing - as soon as you declare it, you're SORNed. You can't tell DVLA 'I'm going to take the car off the road on the 12th, just bear with me until then'.

A cheque? Eek! A brand new computerised system results in the issuing of an ancient relic. :)

Darn, that's a shame. But I suppose this way you can do it instantly at the last minute rather than having to make sure you post the disc back to DVLA so that it reaches them before month end...

My tax runs out in January but I might take the disc out and leave last years in, just to give nosy twonks something to think about.

What can you expect from the Govt, IDs told us UC was the best thing since sliced bread and they couldn't get that to work, and now the road tax.

Has having no tax all of a sudden become a police matter? Can hardly do you for failing to display which WAS a police matter.

It is a police matter, in as much they will investigate and pass the details to the DVLA, but any prosecution will be by the DVLA - on the evidence of the police.
The police used to prosecute for the old offence of failing to display.

I think you know what I mean. Not having road tax by itself, is not something the police actively deal with. However you are correct that in the event of a driver being stopped for a possible motoring offence and the car is showing on their system as 'un-taxed', then they will report it to the DVLA. THAT is all what will happen which answers SS's question.
