There is no longer any connection between having a tax disc and having insurance. Neither application online nor in person at a post office have a check for insurance cover.

You will not be allowed to tax your car if you do not have a valid insurance in place. Same for MOT.

Your'e missing my point. If someone dosn't pay their "road tax", they probably don't bother paying their insurance premium either. The only visible clue to perhaps set the alarm bells ringing to another driver, is an out of date tax disc.

Wrong. This does not apply any more.

Wrong. The site you quoted states:
Drivers no longer need to find their motor insurance certificate when taxing their car, thanks to new rules that came into effect in December 2013. Emphasis on the word certificate. You still need insurance to tax a vehicle, which is what I stated.

You need insurance to possess a tax disc, under the continuous insurance regs, as I said above. But the insurance is NOT checked when you buy the tax. It's not checked via the certificate, and it's not checked via MID. Whether you buy the tax online or at a PO, you can tax an uninsured car. You'll be fined for it, yes, but you can do it.

I have taxed both my own car and my daughters car in the last few days, and on both occasions they were done online via DLA. On both occasions the website states 'Please wait while we check your documentation before completion.' So DLA certainly check for insurance and MOT.

That's one heck of a leap of logic.

If they checked for insurance when taxing your car, the DVLA wouldn't have its little "continuous insurance" money spinner would it????

  • They should be giving a discount seeing as they are no longer printing and issuing tax discs.

Also it should be available on all post offices now if all they got to do is scan a barcode and take your money, just like paying any other bill.

They do check. About a month ago my dad's insurance and VED fell a few days apart, he re-insured with a new provider, and took 48 hours to show as insured on AskMID. Tried buying tax online in that period and it wouldn't allow him to. As soon as it showed up on AskMID he tried again, and hey-presto, all worked lovely.
