When the new Road Tax disply rules come in in October I know you don't have to display the disc anymore but will the authorities still send out a disc?

Also how do you prove how much tax is unused when selling or buying a vehicle?

How do you prove how much tax is unused? Irrelevant under the new rules. Cars can't be sold with tax under the changes. The seller has to cash it in and buyer has to buy tax from date of sale. This change has led to numerous posts on motoring sites as to how the Government is ripping us off by getting two months worth of tax in month of sale.

But how do you prove any unused part when selling or buying?

there is no unused part , as its non transferable to the new owner.

when it is sold , you can claim full months of un used tax back , but the buyer has to tax it from the day he bought it

You do not need to prove anything. When a vehicle is sold the current RFL becomes void and the selling keeper will automatically be refunded the remaining whole months. The new keeper has to then tax it ffrom the start of the current month.

Reading various news sites yesterday and they reckon its going to cost the DVLA a fortune in untaxed vehicles.

They forecast that lots of people wont bother taxing their cars anymore. With no visible disc for nosey neighbours to check how will anyone know?

Only way they will get caught is by ANPR.
Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...

  • Wouldn't they have addresses of people with no tax, and no sorn, so not too hard to know who has and who hasn't from the database?

Anybody who's willing to drive a car with no correct registered keeper already is doing.

I don't see that there will be any change in the number of non-payers.

There will be an increase in the number of ANPR cameras and the DVLA already have a data base for exactly that purpose - the disc serves no purpose.

I think this from the DVLA sums it up:

"We have a proven track record in making vehicle tax easy to pay but hard to avoid, with over 99% of all vehicles taxed. Given the systems now in place we take enforcement action direct from our electronic records rather than requiring a tax disc."
  • Will they still send out reminders or will everyone now pay by DD?
