Uninhabitable flat- Urgent help needed for kids in first flat

How many of them didn't bother going to view the property
Quite honestly these lads have spent a year at uni already-and students especially in areas where there is no halls accommodation after the first year the unis and the other students discuss the issues and pitfalls. The fact they thought they knew better is something that can't be taught -some people have to learn by experience.
I bet if you mere to log onto the uni website you'd find lots of advice-that they've completely ignored with regards to housing.
Support them by all means but don't sort it for them - it's a massive learning experience that is better learned now than later.
No one is gloating -that is in your head because you know they were stupid-but it is exasperating for universities when they time after time offer advice and warnings to avoid this kind of situation -which some students choose to ignore out of ignorance or arrogance.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole

As an example.
Manchester University official term for 2014-15 starts today.
Manchester Student Housing (the official uni unit that holds list of registered landlords etc and assists in housing issues for students) opens for students looking for housing for the 2015-16 opens on 1 October.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I cannot believe how rude and unhelpful some of the posters have been on here. I am quite sure the OP did not want or need any of the remarks about how 'silly' the tenants have been. I see this post as no different to anyone else posting about disrepair. If you can't give helpful advice then please don't post.
OP, Shelter have some excellent advice on disrepair.

I wonder how much attention the LL will pay to letters written to them by parents who aren't the tenants?.................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0 -
OP what does your son think of this place?
I can see why you would not want to live in damp and squalor, and neither would I now, but many of us can cast our minds back on living in awful places when we were young. It didn't bother me much then and maybe your son is not too concerned either.
Parents, especially if they are living far away, probably worry more than we need to about student houses. No harm is likely to come to him there and it is probably best to avoid knowing too much about the squalor. I know as a student I made sure my parents never visited anywhere I was living.
But all those anecdotes we can tell about mushrooms growing from skirting boards and windows falling out stand us in good stead for years to come.0 -

I can because it happens all the time and the people who make these remarks are perfect and have never made a mistake in their lives.
On their 18th birthdays, they all suddenly knew everything they needed to know to live mistake-free adult life.
If I was like them, I hope I wouldn't also be as smug and unhelpful as they have been to the OP who is already under a lot of stress.0 -

At Imperial they teach chemistry and produce nobel prize winners. At your university anseld and Bantex they seem to produce bullies and bear baiters.
I shall now withdraw from this bear pit where I feel ill equipped to deal with the vitriol and schadenfreude.
Your kids aint gonna noble prizes. Im pretty sure of that.0
