Well ive had aol for a few years and my contract ends this month so i registerd my interest, albeit it says no commitemt by doing so.

But im on a special deal they did last year for existing customers, silver package for £9.99. So if i did sign up id be doubling my broadband bill but getting a free laptop, guess it depends how good the laptop is but the spec is a bit vague on cpw`s website.

Just for info, you can avoid using the aol software if your adament you dont want to. You can configure outlook express to use aol email, and the netgear router automatically connects you so you can just use internet explorer, it is a bit of a pain if it crashes.

orange broadband is the same 20quid but you get a £300 pound voucher at currys to use against any laptop, is this deal better guys??

I am no laptop expert, but it seems the Orange Laptop will be Celeron M430 at 1.73 GHz and 256mb of RAM. Where as the AOL laptop (from the small amount of info we have been given) will be Celeron 540 at 1.6 GHz and 1GB of RAM.

    Which is better?

The AOL deal looks to be the better one on all accounts, by far.

    AOL
    Speed Up to 8 Mbps
    Download Limit 40 gb

    Manufacturer DELL
    Hard Drive 80gb
    Memory 1000mb
    Router Wireless

    Orange
    Speed Up to 2 Mbps
    Download Limit 2 gb

    Manufacturer Ei Systems
    Hard Drive 40gb
    Memory 256mb
    Router Wired

AOL has better potential speed (speed willl depend on how far you live from your local exchange)and you have a higher download limit.

The laptop from AOL is a recognised brand in DELL. The hard drive is double that of PC World/oranges, AOL laptop has four times the memory of the orange one and you get a free netgear wireless router.

This looks like a great deal, i'm with AOL but i transferred over to them and used my own wireless router so i'm not tied into a contract, hope that means i'll be able to get this deal. Down side is just bought a new laptop :( guess i could always sell one?

Btw i've never had any issues with AOL but had a lot of probs with Orange (reason why i switched) so i know which deal i would prefer.

  • If AOL gave me ten laptops I still wouldn't go back with them..
Last time I had their software on my comp it took over and was very unstable!!
I've also heard Orange are not worth a !!!! too, customer service is bad!!

You don't need the AOL software installed with the wireless router

Agreed, they ( Orange and AOL ) are both very poor BB providers, anyone getting stitched in to them for 2 years must be mad.

You may well end up with a carpy laptop and no BB connection.

Too true, probably low spec laptop to match their low spec services..

As we say in Barnsley... (YOU DON'T GET OWT FOR NOWT)

i agree with donnydude, the AOL software is very temperamental and always crashes! it also slows the computer down immensely. you do not have to have the software on your Pc though, just use IE7 and www.aol.co.uk to check your email!
i have been with AOL now for about 7+ years and was going to come off of it because of better prices from virgin media (as i have their digital TV aswell) but now am going to try this deal!
    thanks op!

I have the AOL software installed but I never have to open it. Once it is all set up the wireless connection is automatically picked up by my laptop.
