Hello
How about this for an idea, I know there will be lots of people out there that can tell me why this cant happen but here goes anyway..........
We pick a date, say 10 November 2008, which would give us time to organise a petition or whatever it may be called. Send emails out to everyone we know to say that on 10 November 2008 as many people as possible will drop every single gas/elec supplier and try to get the entire country to sign up on that date to a predecided supplier.
Letting the "chosen one" know that if prices arent reduced within three months, we shall then be dropping them.
There really must be something that we as customers can do without breaking any laws to get these fat cat companies to work for us not their shareholders or themselves.
It really is time we as a country of hard workers trying to keep on top of things tried to sort this out ourselves, the government wont do it, the fat cats dont care and all the time we are hearing that these companies are planning to put the prices up.
So all you experts out there lets try it, i know we would need to have nerves of steel have a bit of messing around.
Chose a date, chose a company, keep our nerve and see what we as individuals working together can do. You never know what is possible unless we try.:j

I ENTIRELY agree with you on this---BUT!
Majority of Brits are too LAZY (can't be bothered) to do anything..Tony Blair sussed everyone out n now the rest are following him...
Time we did a FRENCHY I reckon...0 -
Whilst I'm sure there will be some on here who would sneer at this 'plan' (be careful, lots of energy company employees posting on here and not declaring it, often during working hours as well. Hmmm) I really like it! In fact, I was thinking of a very similar plan only the other day. The main problem, like has already been stated, is the British public are, traditionally, the most lazy and apathetic in the Western world (the reason why we get screwed over by most retailers compared to most other countries). It would be fun to do this, though...Call me Carmine....
HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??0 -

Do you really think it could work? Do you think the system is designed to enable millions of people to switch on one day? Or do you think maybe there would be a backlog of months?
Why would I want to switch to a (probably) more expensive tariff anyway? How would that punish the energy companies?0 -
rather than trying to get people to switch to a different supplier, shouldnt the idea be to get as many people as possible to switch off all their connections for a day??!!
this i believe would make an impact!0 -
why not say that at 11:00 10/9/08 as a protest against rising fuel prices EVERYONE IN THE UK will turn off everything that consumes fuel in their house of one minute... I bet that will eat into their fatcat profits somewhat.

The difference would be hardly noticable. If you turn off everything for a minute (or a day), you'd then need to catch up (washing up, washing clothes etc) soon after so there would be very little net result.
There was something along these lines tried earlier in the year (as a green thing though) with backing from various charities & I think energy suppliers. National Grid said that the difference between that day and any other was barely noticable. (May say more about the British public than anything else.)
Why not go for a longer term solution - energysaving, insulation etc?0 -

What a great idea ! We'll all sit in the dark and cold and watch all the "fat cats" suffer, shall we.
If this crazy scheme were to come into fruition, the first thing to happen would be everyone in the energy industry would be laid off - but that would be OK because they wouldn't have any energy bills to pay either !
Then the "excess" profits would dry up, and most of the pension funds would go bust - because that is where most of the profits go - but that would be OK because these pensioners wouldn't have energy bills to pay either.
