I had a nightmare getting these klingons off my back.
AOL are an absolute nightmare to cancel, even when you think you paid them, they continue to charge you as i found out today with a 30 bounced direct debit out of nowhere.
Despite assurance from the phone monkeys that it was taken care of, it clearly was not.
Too top that off, being placed on hold for over 20 minutes when i only mentioned my screen name, took the biscuit.
If you have signed up for AOL for the sake of a laptop (and to be fair spec wise it is complete crap), you have been well and truly caught by the dangalies.Halifax - Victory!
Capital One - Victory!
RBS - Cannot claim as it is a store card

I wasn't too nervous about it really because I've always been with BT and I've never had any problems with the service...hopefully that will continue! I've received my wireless router now and I'm just waiting for the laptop to be delivered, should be tomorrow fingers crossed. Have you had yours yet?
I'm the same, they aren't perfect but so far they have been good. I spoke to someone on the phone monday (not customer services, a special dept I have forgotten the name of) and they said that it took 5 working days for your contract to start (Friday for me) then the Laptop would arrive within the next 5 working days, so again last day of that is Friday. Hub arrived Monday. I just hope its not too complex to set up!0 -

Sorry to hear about your probs. If you pay on a credit card each month, it should always be easy to claim the money back if its taken when it shouldnt.
I personally think the laptop is pretty good spec for every day use, surfing the net, etc. Its better than my current laptop! lol....
I'm personally waiting for the clamour to finish in a few weeks, then I plan to take up this offer... :beer:0 -

I know I'm the same I'm usually ok with setting things up but I'm always worried that I'm not going to be able to do it lol! I got my hub on Monday too but I haven't looked at it properly yet. I was expecting my laptop tomorrow because they told me on the phone that it would arrive about 3 days after my hub but now maybe I won't get it until next Friday if they've told you that

Exactly the same for me. Hope the laptop delivery process is more organised.0 -
Laptop just arrived. I'll keep you posted as to any problems with the contract, laptop, hidden charges etc.
To anyone still waiting (which is a lot of people), you get an email the day before it arrives, and the email has a tracking number, which can be tapped into http://www.city-link.co.uk/track_parcel/track_parcel.php in the customer reference box.Back on MSE after a 5 year hiatus.

Couple of tips to help people like me who've taken up this deal:
1) ID/password - not arrived and/or held up in "no post for next week"
I had no sign after 12 days of my AOL Master Signon Name and password arriving - though all sorts of other booklets/leaflets/ToCs/waffle. I was particularly concerned about this as am MAC'ing existing ADSL to them and hadn't been told when and feared being cut off as need an AOL ID/password in ones ADSL modem/router.
So phoned up and got the ID and agreed a password within a few minutes. Validated it worked online, and downloaded latest AOL 9.0 VR software and signing in/managing a/c ok. All just as well as they confirmed my MAC would take effect during Fri 5/10 - ie tomorrow.
2) Memory upgrade for the "free" Dell Inspiron 1520.
All the info I have indicates it comes with 1GB made up of 2 x 512MB. The 1520 can hold 2 memory cards of this specification:
200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC5300 (ie 667MHz)
Ideally you want 2 identically spec'd memory cards so that they can be accessed in dual/parallel mode for extra speed. So to upgrade from 1GB to 2GB (greatly preferred for Windows Vista Premium usage) requires the purchase of 2 x 1GB cards (and hopefully the sale of the redundant 2 x 512MB cards on eBay).
The best value 2 x 1GB cards I can find are the
Crucial CT12864AC667 (aka CT699815)
Dabs.com for £21.98 each 1GB
ebuyer.com for £21.99 each 1GB
or £45.02 for the CT2KIT12864AC667 with 2 of them in one package
Corsair VS2GSDSKIT667D2 2GB kit
at £46.99 at scan.com £45.03 dabs
or 2 x the 1GB ones at £22.90 each ie £45.80 at scan.com
All the sites have different postage add-ons (c£50 free ebuyer, c£100 dabs at weekend, c£25 for some Scan customers).
Hope this helps someone.0
