I hate Christmas. Who's with me?

It's not even about what she's got or not got but Netflix for a child who has sky in their room is pointless, more pointless when I spend all of my working day hearing about how I'm so lucky to be marrying my fairly well off other half who has a good job and it's so unfair because she can't afford [dress for night out/shoes/this months sky bill/the mortgage/trip to Iceland/my scarf], it's constant but in December she can suddenly sink £1000 in presents and calls anyone who doesn't tight! Those are actual things she's told me she can't afford since last Monday.
I'm wearing a new perfume to work today as my old bottle finished and i just know all I'll hear is "I hope my husband buys me perfume for Christmas, I can't afford to just nip into boots to buy a bottle on a whim, you're so lucky blah blah blah"
yep that does sound annoying, no doubt about it.
but just wanted to say - aren't just about all pressies "pointless"? ie they're not usually necessities, they are usually luxuries. And you get loads more stuff on Netflix, even for kids only, compared with what Sky has.0 -
So I came home eventually laden down with +%$£te.
AARGH!
Christmas is a horrible time for people like me who hate it but cannot beat it really. It is the boss.
I probably can't say I hate it, but that's because iopted out of most of it. I stopped sending or receiving presents for anyone over the age of 16 at Xmas a few years back. So currently I have one present to buy and some Xmas cards. Go to M&S on Xmas Eve about 2 p.m. to buy food.
Though I get mildly irritated by the crowds as I'm just doing my normal weekly shop.0 -

Mum made Christmas she catered, got good pressies even though i did not know what i wanted and generally made Christmas special... now it falls to me (the veggie who has to cook a turkey and the trimmings for the family) and make things special like Mum would have done. My Dad is getting excited about Christmas for the first time ever, as it would have been what Mum wanted. So I will put on a show for Christmas even though I feel like curling up under the duvet with a bottle of Bailey's and a pack of mince pies and waiting for it all to be over!!
Hugs to you. It is hard, my mum died just before christmas 6 years ago - the funeral was on 22 Dec. That first one was tough. My kids were 13 and 11 at that time so i had to make an effort for them, it was ok in the end. Quieter than usual but I think she would have approved us trying to "get on with it".
I have come round to liking christmas now - after many years of not. I just do it our way now and try not to overthink it, or make it "perfect". It helps that i am not a shopper and don't watch TV, so i don't get the adverts..I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -

I'd rather be chained to Michael buble while he's doing a sponsored Christmas songs a thon than have to listen to that whinge of a woman for one more second - 5 shifts to go, thank god I'm part time.
All of today She swung from "can't afford perfume" to reciting marks and Spencer's food shopping list to feed the 5000 back to "can't afford new hand bag" then onto "bought small mountain of clothes to wear Christmas Day" finally rounding off with "we couldn't afford to get married" when I gave up and started reading a wedding magazine.
Why do people feel the need to get into stupid amounts of debt for one day and then whinge about the debt they're in? No doubt in the new year she'll be complaining about how she's spent her wages and is skint for 2 weeks since we are being paid early as pay day falls on a bank holiday.0 -
Just for you Op, I saw this and thought of you OP. Comedy gold from Cyanide & Happiness.0

I love this thread! I don't hate Christmas but just bob along with it. If I had my way we would be on a Caribbean cruise over the Christmas period but we stay at home and have my partners family over for Christmas Day. I don't dislike it but look forward to it being over! Come 1st January we are on the first train down to Southampton to get on a cruise ship the next day!!0

Everyone has a birthday where they get presents. Why do they need presents at Christmas too? its not their birthday.:footie:0

This might sound terrible, but anyway.
The ONLY reason I tolerate Christmas through gritted teeth is because of my mother. She and our family have had a lot of tragedy and deaths of loved ones and she has early dementia too. She has driven me to distraction over the years, and is not easy to look after either. But she is MUM, so I look on it as payback time.
So, as long as she is with us I will go through the flippin motions and get over it as quickly as possible.
OH and I said that whenever she leaves us we will go somewhere that does not celebrate Christmas, for Christmas IYSWIM! That might sound terrible, but I am sure many will empathise and understand.
Still, our family is close enough so the rubbish of making a special day of it is, well, RUBBISH.
I don't want to blow my trumpet too loud, but I think looking after Mum especially at that time is the spirit of Christmas.
Even though I am a really special BAH HUMBUG!!0
