Ugh hating Christmas. My niece is getting an iPad from all her aunts and uncles - it's something she's wanted for years and will be a huge surprise for her and I know she'll appreciate it.

Mentioned to someone at work that we'd bought it and was told "oh we got child an iPad and an iPhone and Netflix subscription and a tv for her room and £200 worth of bits, I'd be disappointed if all I got was an iPad". !!!!!! it's £50 a couple and niece in question is still in primary school, she's the same age as this child. What child needs an iPhone and Netflix?!?

I've bought niece books and her favourite sweets to unwrap but I'm not being guilt tripped into buying anything else, no way! I have 3 nieces with more on the way and £50 is where I draw the line. I have memories of getting clothes and small toys from my aunties and I was always well chuffed - I'm only 29!

That's a very dangerous race-to-the-bottom style argument you're playing with. After all, your niece doesn't need an iPad.;)

Surely though at that age it's one or the other? What will she do with the phone that she can't do with the iPad? It's not as if she will be making phone calls as this kid never walks further than building to car distance.

Also Netflix! For a child? I find some of programmes on Netflix a bit adult, what kid needs to watch breaking bad or orange is the new black?

Why? Because that's what you said?

Why is it any of your business?

Netflix has a whole children's section.

Re Netflix my two children both have Netflix in their rooms, they are 5 and 6. It's a kids only profile so no adult shows on it just kids shows, that will probably be what your friend does for their child.

Not sure why they would need an iPad and iPhone though..

ooh don't go down that road Jen, over the years I've learned never to question, or bother about, how much is spent on how many items bought for kids of all ages at christmas. Everyone has their own ideas of whats acceptable, I don't need to agree with them, and they don't need to agree with me :). I spend what I'm comfortable spending, on what I'm comfortable buying.

Well have any Christmas haters been converted yet?

    NOT ME!!

I decided to go to town today to pick up a couple of things, you know a pressie for Mum, a few gift bags for the four N+N pressies, buy a few stamps, post a few cards. You get the flippin drift.

Anyway, I said to myself as I got off the tram. !!!!!! am I doing? I HATE Christmas! This is ridiculous. Despite my bestest EVER efforts I get sucked into this thing again.

So I came home eventually laden down with +%$£te.

    AARGH!

Christmas is a horrible time for people like me who hate it but cannot beat it really. It is the boss.

    Yes I do know ..

I think you are mixing it up between clearance item and heavily discounted price on Black Friday and Boxing day.

Clearance item is the item left in the stock (e.g from the season for instance) and need to be cleared to prepare a new room for items on the new season. You might find the one on clearance items are not suitable for the season, it is only a few left, you could not get your size, model, range, color you want, etc.

While the one on heavily discounted price on Black Friday and Boxing day could be the newly stocked item. For instance on the last Black Friday a lot of people get 5TB external HDD for £99.00 on Amazon and or John Lewis, Argos. You will never find such new item on clearance sale.

Ah. You mistake me for someone who cares.

I don't hate Christmas generally, it is my first Christmas without my Mum. Mum made Christmas she catered, got good pressies even though i did not know what i wanted and generally made Christmas special... now it falls to me (the veggie who has to cook a turkey and the trimmings for the family) and make things special like Mum would have done. My Dad is getting excited about Christmas for the first time ever, as it would have been what Mum wanted. So I will put on a show for Christmas even though I feel like curling up under the duvet with a bottle of Bailey's and a pack of mince pies and waiting for it all to be over!!
Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"

It's not even about what she's got or not got but Netflix for a child who has sky in their room is pointless, more pointless when I spend all of my working day hearing about how I'm so lucky to be marrying my fairly well off other half who has a good job and it's so unfair because she can't afford [dress for night out/shoes/this months sky bill/the mortgage/trip to Iceland/my scarf], it's constant but in December she can suddenly sink £1000 in presents and calls anyone who doesn't tight! Those are actual things she's told me she can't afford since last Monday.

I'm wearing a new perfume to work today as my old bottle finished and i just know all I'll hear is "I hope my husband buys me perfume for Christmas, I can't afford to just nip into boots to buy a bottle on a whim, you're so lucky blah blah blah"

Sounds like a stressful and emotional Christmas for you, sillyvixen, I hope it all goes well for you and your guests, especially your Dad. :)
