I do like Christmas. I'm feeling really down and grouchy a the moment though. My son has to work this year which is fine. I've no issue with that. However, he can't fit us in for a visit until the new year it seems. Works do comes first.
It will be the first time in 24 years I won't be spending Christmas with him and I know I need to get a grip but I'm feeling so,hurt at present.

I don't hate Christmas and am happy for others to celebrate it, but as I don't have children and most of my family live too far away, I spend it alone. But I am very happy to do so. In the past well-meaning friends have invited me to spend it with them and, frankly, I've been pretty bored because I've had to spend it their way - watching programmes they like, or playing games and feeling embarrassed by their family squabbles. I really do prefer to get up when I want; not bother to dress up; eat what and when I want; and just chill out watching films and programmes I like. Also having a drink, which I wouldn't be able to do if I have to drive somewhere - not that I'm a drinker I need to add, but it's nice at Christmas. But when I tell people I'll be alone at home they give me either sympathetic or curious looks. I wish people would understand that some of us actually are very happy with our own company at times. Am I unusual?

Cackle, no I don't think you're particularly unusual. Probably most of us have spent more than one Christmas accommodating to the preferences of others, so particularly if you are working and time off is a precious commodity, being able to have a couple of days totally relaxing and following your own inclinations rather than the desires of others is very liberating.

Winter is a low time of year and having some time and space to oneself is can be good for your emotional wellbeing.

If that's what you really want to do but avoid being put under pressure to visit somebody else and drive when you don't want to, just say politely that you've already made other arrangements without being specific.

Stock up with some nice food goodies, books or whatever interests you, put your feet up and have a lovely relaxing time!

Wait until he gets a partner & they decide to spend Christmas with the OH's parents instead of you. :)

Yep he has one! I suppose I'm glad he is able to have a Christmas dinner with her family before going to work in th evening.it must be tough when they choose the partners family, over you for no other reason I'm sure. Got that to look forward to!
My daughter will be married by next Christmas and I suspect she will be going to her new mother in las for Christmas or she would be lonely.

Well Christmas for many people means a break from work ….
Who did not like it?? I can only think the people who hane holiday every day because they do not work …

So I am not with you sorry ....
I always hated the enforced time off - when I lived with my parents, it was a case of walking on eggshells around my father, lest he throw one of his paddywacks and start throwing crockery; and when I was married to my ex, it was tread on eggshells around him or risk getting thumped.

Trust me, I'd far rather have been at work.

 As if the christmas music being played everywhere isn't bad enough, I popped into my local Tesco Express this afternoon and had to endure Auld Lang Syne and Happy New Year by Abba while waiting to pick up my Click & Collect order :(
It seems they've skipped Christmas and jumped straight to New Year! :wall:

I think it was different years ago when we didn't have so much stuff. It was exciting to get nice things you didn't get at other times, it was all welcome but now most of us buy what we want, eat what we want so what is so special?

I usually go to Midnight Mass and have a quiet day, grandchildren are all with the other grannies this year so we are doing a childrens Christmas the weekend before, I don't get hung up about the 25th and the other grannies do so I usually have them a few days before or after.

My library books are due back on the 24th so I will be looking forward to a good read, a nice meal and some chocolate, I don't like Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, mince pies or alcohol so I think I am allowed some of my favourite chocolates, well I'm having them anyway.

For some strange reason reading this thread inspired me to go and start wrapping presents. I am now well ahead of myself which is a relief. Writing cards tomorrow. Then I can relax
