There is one in my (rented) flat, but I've probably used it about 3-4 times since I moved in 9 months ago. It's a tiny kitchen and to have it sitting where it can be plugged in takes up too much room so I've got it tucked away and only take it out and plug it in when I need it. Only used it to defrost things but I've got pretty good at remembering to take stuff out the night before so it's very rare!

We use ours to store cooling food away from the cat before it gets put into the fridge or freezer. (the food into the MW, not the cat)
It has been known that dishes cleared form the table have been popped into the MW until cool enough; to be left for days accidently. Wasteful and not DFW or OS.

I use mine very occassionally (pehaps five or six times a year) to pre cook baked potatoes before putting them in the oven to crisp.

Apart from that the only other thing I use it for, every day, is to warm the dinner plates before serving dinner. Full blast for about three minutes get the four of them piping hot.:D

I honestly cannot remember the last time I used it for anything else. If it broke I probably wouldn't replace it.
  • I use mine to cook baked potatoes before crisping the skin in the oven (cheaper than having the oven on for an hour) and for heating value baked beans (it only takes 30 seconds and is so quick). I only have a tiny one and would never want a large one. I know loads of people who paid extra for a large microwave that also grills and who never use the grill function!

  • Well mine is just used for reheating leftovers since I became on OS convert! The only other things would be starting off baked potatoes before popping them in the oven and the odd bit of veg.

I defrost stuff. Bake potatoes and apples. Always cook rice in it. Makes brilliant sauces, especially custard. I also make sponge puddings in two minutes. Of course there's always heating baked beans or making scrambled egg too. I use mine alongside the main oven and hob, not exclusively.

  • I use mine many times a day - find it to be a real help as I have two boys aged 2 and 1yrs. It's great for heating their meals (they have small portions of whatever we ate the night before - in true OS style). Also use it for steaming veg, sauces, scrabbled egg, porridge and my absolute favourite - microwave flapjack!

Use mine a lot, potatoes, reheating HM food, beans, porridge, custard, steaming stuff, even for bacon on a little griddle thing I got etc. I hate using the hob for reheating as my pans are rubbish (still haven't got round to buying new) and don't have a dishwasher so when it sticks it means loads of scrubbing. I don't use it to defrost food. I bought a combi one and have never used the grill.
One day I might be more organised...........

I bottle fruit and make jam in mine
  • I use my ancient and very large microwave quite a lot. microwave meringues, steamed jam sponge, also porrige and scrambled egg as they make such a mess of the saucepans and the kids can do it them selves. Also jacket potatoes. They are one of those things that if I fancy one I don't want to wait for an hour or I go off the idea.
