Do you actually use your Microwave??

Only thing I cook in the micro is rice and baked pots.
Everything else is just defrosting or re-heating!

I'm in the use-it-quite-a-lot brigade, for defrosting, melting butter for the breadmaker or softening butter for baking, steaming veg, cooking potatoes, and re-heating homemade "ready-meals" from the freezer. I don't like microwaved scrambled eggs but make them for my pets that way.
I like the sound of making sauces, custard and jam in it - will have to look into that! Am yet to try out the jam-making function on the BM yet too. This board has a lot to answer for!0 -
I"m not sure you are supposed to use a microwave without food/moisture in it; a plate doesn't have any moisture and you could break the microwave.

Sponge puddings are brill in the microwave. I use a cheap packet sponge mix, bung in the egg, add cocoa powder if the kids want a choccy pud and put it into a greased bowl in the milkrowave (so called as when DS was little he thought it was a milkcrowave as thats where his bottles came from!) Hot sponge pudding in 5 minutes. Sometimes do it with plain with jam in bottom of basin instead.
Custard and white sauces are easier to do in the microwave as well.Mortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!0 -
I think I'm going to try a sponge pudding in the microwave tonight inspired by this thread
googled a few recipes and it seems quite simple
Quick question though - I don't have any butter in, a lot of the recipes say butter or marge, do you reckon Trex would be ok instead? Or should I send OH down to the corner shop for some overpriced butter (and curse myself for not stocking up better!!!)0 -
Hi all
We got rid when we moved here 3 months ago, and haven't missed it one iota - horrible things. I'll bet all of you that still use them that after not having it for a few weeks, you just think ahead a bit more and would never miss it.
Never again would i have one of those in my house.0 -
We got rid of ours about 18 months back - it hadn't been used for months at that point, and we needed the worktop space (potato rumbler - now that is a godsend for us).
I can honestly say I only miss it for sponge puddings - but it's probably a good thing - getting the steaming pan up and running is so much of a faff that I don't actually eat as many as I did in microwave days, lol.DFW Nerd no. 884 - Proud to [strike]be dealing with[/strike] have dealt with my debts0 -
I use mine several times a day. I have the combination convection/micro grill, it's especially useful for heating up any pies/pastry snacks it's also great for frozen pizzas and of course the jacket spuds come out lovely and crispy, and it has a slow cooker function as well, so I can slow cook my meals. But best of all is microwaved or even combi'd rice pudding as it is so creamy and great for using up spare milk. I would get rid of my oven before I get rid of my combi microwave.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0

Couldn't do without my MW. It's a combination one and I cook everything in it. Mostly use my "proper" oven for it's grill. The MW door release catch broke recently trapping a reheated plate of food inside. We were amused by the repair man's sense of humour. On the receipt he gave us when we took it for repair, under accessories he wrote "dinner"0

Got rid of ours a couple of years ago and don't miss it one bit. DH reads far too many books about things that aren't good for you, so consequently got rid of it, make our own bread, only buy meat from a butcher......I could go on! It's alright for him, I'm the one that does all the shopping !!:rolleyes:0
