Do you actually use your Microwave??

Soup.
Things like those little individual puddings and custard pots (plus the occasional cheeky ready meal).
Baked potato - also with it being just me I've found it's quicker and easier to do a portion of mash by baking a potato in the microwave, scooping it out and mashing with a fork on my plate.
Quickly warming things like a bit of pie or slice of quiche.
Reheating meals when dearest Mumsie used to cook for me and I'd get in later on. She uses it for Christmas pudding too.
I think that's the lot. I heat the odd homemade-and-frozen dish in there but for some reason I prefer doing them in a pan most of the time. Also agree with those who said they dislike defrosting in the microwave because of the way the edges start to cook. I can't stand that, it's awful.
Oh, almost forgot. I'm sure I've a recipe somewhere for a chocolate mug cake done quickly in the microwave, but haven't tried it yet as I usually don't really like microwaved cake. It gets a strange, rather synthetic sort of taste.0 -
I just cant believe this thread!
I logged in to look for hints on where to buy a good value microwave. NOW! I am bereft. Mine has died after only 5 years. I am seriously wondering if I should even research it. I am not putting on the main oven to bake a potato for my lunch. That would double my electricity bill, I am sure. I got the book out to see what I should be matching on features. I couldnt believe how many features it had that I didnt use tho.
I barely use a hob or other oven. If I could only have one appliance in the kitchen, it would be the MW, not even the hob.
But that is cooking for one person 95% of the time, so perhaps this is about quantities rather than anything else.0 -
Cooking pasta and rice, softening butter, frying mushrooms and bringing red wine to "room temperature". Oh and "re-freshening" stale bread.0
