I would never bother sterelising cloths in there, we need to build up healthy immune systems, i do not live in a filthy house but i dont drown every surface in anti bacterial sprays.

The reason I sterilise my dishcloth in the MW is because it is used to wipe down food prep surfaces etc, and no, I don't use any of these fancy anti-bac sprays either ;)

But a wet/damp cloth sitting on the side of the sink 24/7 will harbour a multitude of bacteria which will multiply rapidly, especially if one of the kids has wiped up a spill and not rinsed it out  so I want to try and avoid spreading that bacteria over food surfaces if I can :)

I'm like most of you - use it for porridge, scrambled eggs, rice etc.

It's useful for steralising the jars for you jam makers.

I steam my veg in a very cheap plastic Microwave Multi-Steamer which cost me £5 over 15 years ago - also good for rice. Also do my fish - so easy and so quick.

Re the jam - try https://www.microwaveassociation.org.uk and for other stuff as well!

thriftlady - if you're out there, could you tell me where you got your "wheatbag" from for your neck? I have a friend in need - thanks!;)

I use ours every morning to make real porage for breakfast. It's delicious. I also use it to make sauces such as cheese sauce for pasta - though you have to cook in short bursts and stir a lot! It saves on the washing up as you can do it all in one dish.

Well I use my microwave loads. No, I don't eat lots of junk food - in fact I have recently had a heart bypass op, so I am VERY careful about eating healthily.

I buy a lot of fresh vegetable and fish, and take advantage of these when on special offer and freeze them - so I need to be able to thaw them out. (Blanched corn on the cob freezes very well and 10 mins in the microwave both defrosts and cooks it ready to eat - which is economical and leaves space free on my hob for other things - less washing up too!)

But I also home-cook all of our meals to maintain tight control on the fat, salt and sugar content. The microwave is an asset in their preparatioins and as it makes sense to cook too much at a time, I freeze up the extra too. Again the microwave is ideal for defrosting and reheating these healthy ready meals in a jiffy. Pasta sauces are particularly time saving.

So, yes I use my microwave a lot. I would miss it dreadfully if it was to break down and I eat extremely healthily.

I got rid of the microwave about 3 weeks ago as it was too big. The intention was to buy a new smaller one and I even got as far as identifiying the one to buy. It was out of stock when I went to buy it and I haven't bothered since. I'm not saying that I won't want one in the near or far future but right now I'm managing fine without one. Only really used it for porridge in the morning and hot milk in the evening.

I used to have a microwave but after split with ex and moving to my new house which is a LOT smaller, there just didn't seem to be enough room in the kitchen for one and it didn't seem to be a priority on the money side of things either.
Now 10 months on, still don't have one and don't miss it all. Jacket spuds take longer but are so much nicer done in the oven and I take stuff out the night before from the freezer to defrost, so all in all don't think I really need one.

To get back to the original question:

I did use mine a lot when I was weaning the kids to heat up ice cubes of veg puree. Then we lent it to a friend who was getting her kitchen done, never missed it, stuck it in the garage for 3 years and finally donated it to the Scout Hall.

I can't think of a lot I would use one for and there are appliances such as the BM I'd rather give the space to.
