October 2014 Grocery Challenge

Hi All,
I have been following the grocery challenge for quite a while now so I thought I would jump on board.
In August my DH and I spent £380 on food, quite shocking when its only us and our 2 year old son.
I got back into stock taking and meal planning and managed £305 for September, so now I am hopefully on a roll!
We are expecting our second child in February so getting to grip on our finances.
So, after going round the houses a bit, could you put me down for £290 for October.
Many Thanks
xTrying to make our money work for us and not the other way round!!0 -
Yesterday and today have been NSD for me
I seem to have managed to finally get into the habit of cash shopping. We had $350 for food in September, and we have $18 left to last until our shopping trip on Friday when I withdraw the first $100 from our grocery budget. I can't think of anything we need to buy either. SO I'm hoping I manage 4 NSD in a row.
I'm quite excited as I'm dragging fiance off to Ald! for the first time. I hope they are as good value here in the US as they are in the UK.0 -
Ready to start tomorrow! I have loads of food in, and have made a meal plan, but I am going to have to sort portion sizes out for while DD1 is at University. I keep making too much! I thawed turkey steaks last night and ended up with a whole fillet slice left, so tonight I battened it really flat and thin, and spread it with some stuffing (just made up Paxo) and rolled it up and wrapped in bacon. I roasted it for 45 minutes and it was really nice. There was plenty for two but Dd2 wouldn't have it and made a frozen pizza (last one and buying no more!!). I will gave the other half on sandwich for lunch tomorrow.
Have to go to the opticians in the morning and it is right opposite B&M, and Home and Bargain, so I will have to resist the urge to go in!
I DO NOT need anything!Jane

Right. Starting tomorrow. Need to really try to cutback this month, despite it only being my 3rd week back in the challenge. Anyway, gonna say £400. I need quite a bit of stuff which has run right down. Staple products. The £400 is for 5 of us and to include all packed lunch stuff, toiletries, washing powers ect. I'm also gonna make it include any takeaway food too, which should stop me from buying any (thats the plan anyway!).
Wish me luck.... I think i'm gonna need it!!

First shop of the month due today both from Asd* and Tesc*. Would have just been the one place , but needed KIlner-esque airtight containers for flour; as one of the outside walls in my kitchen is creating mould in the top shelf of the baking cupboard due to the drop in temp. Luckily it only affected one bag before I discovered it. I wasn't in this house last October, so wouldn't have known.
Will report back with spends later and updated sig
ASD* grocery spend was £23.63 and Tesc*s was £46.16. So, £69.79. I also got YS English breakfast muffins and YS donuts. So another 60p.GC Jan £101.91/£150 Feb £70.96/150 Mar £100.43/150 Apr £108.45 app/150 May £149.70/150 Jun £155.15/150 July £76.30/£150 (includes food, toiletries and cleaning from 13th to 12th of each month. Found you!!:jTook me absolutely ages to find you.I was looking in the debt-free wannabe challenges
.
For the last few months of this challenge,I have budgeted £300 (for 2 adults, and 4 under 13's).Would love to lower this a bit,but in September I went over budget by £15 (which did include £8 box of washing powder that will last aaaaages, but that is still over budget.)Do I jump in both feet first, and budget,say,£280/£270??

Happy Green - It might be worth carrying on cooking for four and freezing one portion each time; then a couple of times a month you can have an evening off cooking and each have something different from the freezer which you just need to reheat and cook the carbs to go with it. I think it's very difficult to just cook for 3 people! The other alternative, if the 3rd person is a little one, cook for 2 and make up a 3rd meal for the LO with a bit from each portion.
Denise
Thanks, Denise, that's a very good thought. Trouble is both my freezers are filled to the top with harvest produce and little DD2 is 16, lol. But I was thinking of giving DD1 some of the indiviual portions already in the freezer as long as she's returning the tuppers :rotfl:First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win - Gandhi0 -
Perhaps you could have the individual one left over for your lunch the following day while DD2 uses up the LO portions from the freezer or, on second thoughts, maybe you should have the ones from the freezer so you know the boxes will be returned!!! and DD2 have the LO portion the next day.
