4-5 year old BMW or new mazda 3/6, Toyota Auris Hybrid

All,
I know im comparing make of the car that are targeted for different reason. Reason I thought to ask is because 4-5 years BMW is around £10k and 2-3 years old Toyota or Mazda are £10k . If you see price doesnt matter here. My point was is it worth considering old BMW for reasonably new Toyota or Mazda that offers all new gadgets .
Thanks,

TBH Strider590 and darkmatter101 are as bad as each other. On one hand you've a guy who constantly insults anyone for daring to spend their hard-earned on anything new suggesting those buying certain marques as middle-class sheep who can't think for themselves, and on the other, a member who believes anyone buying something less than a performance model in the range isn't as worthy of owning the badge as he is.Its quite amusing that you seem to invade any prestige car related thread to give your view on how crap the car actually is, and how deluded the buyers are, but when challenged and questioned directly on that, you go all quiet?
One needs to get rid of the chip that weighs heavy on his shoulder and the other needs to grow up and get out of the playground.0 -

I guess you need to factor in the costs of running an older premium brand car, against a newer more mainstream model.
Ultimately it really depends what appeals and how risk averse you are. Running an older car could potentially expose you to some large unexpected bills.
To put that in perspective, i would consider myself quite a fan of BMW's however i do 25,000 miles a year and rather than expose myself to potential large unexpected maintenance bills i opted for a 9 month old diesel Golf. Being a smaller car i'm also getting better MPG than say on a 5 year old 5 series.0 -

I do not look down on anyone who does not buy a performance model BMW or any other car brand. My other car is a freaking Yaris. The car before my mighty M3 was a 330i. Some years ago when I was on a tighter budget I had Toyota and a Honda, which were both excellent reliable cars. I have also had the privilege of owning a rx8 and Honda s2000. I still do miss that s2000...
Strider590 automatically dismisses any car that is is targeted towards the upper end of the market. I doubt he has ever driven an inline 6 cylinder petrol, rear wheel drive high revving BMW. I think once he has, he would immediately notice the difference, compared to his amazing Vauxhall Vectra.0 -

Your logic is flawed because price is in fact the pivotal point! You are comparing apples to oranges. If money is at the top of your agenda avoid the BMW. If you simply want a status symbol bar to show off, get an older BMW, base model 4 cylinder engine, put a private plate on it to hide the age and most importantly hide that 116i/318i/520d with an M badge. People would hardly recognise the difference...0 -

Now you're advocating sticking M badges on 'lesser' cars? Isn't that an insult to you and your fellow M enthusiasts?
It's bloody simple to spot the difference between M and non-M cars, even for someone who has only a passing interest in the brand.
OP, end of the day, either of the choices you've mentioned will probably do the job (and you'll be able to overtake in either, as well). Auris hybrid is a very decent car, I've driven one and was impressed by its build quality, comfort, quietness and equipment level. Sure, it's not as exciting as a 911, but most people don't actually care that much.0 -
Auris a bit dull and not that special inside, certainly a step down from a 3 series. Lexus ct another possible option but its no speed demon, or slightly more is an is300h in executive edition form. Lexus will not give you problems, whereas you'll need deep pockets owning a BMW or Merc out of warranty0

.
For your information I was being sarcastic!0 -
OP another good suggestion for you maybe the Honda Insight or the Prius, if you're after a family sized car. Good cars, comfortable and reliable.0
