Hello I have just been through all the statementing process just before it changed to SEND and got my DS the help he needed. He is in a special school and thriving. He has ASD cerebral Palsy language processing disorder sensory processing disorder and cos hes loquacious like your son and loves to read he was being overlooked. He could not make friends and was locked in a world of his own but had no obvious stimming . The point was if were to meet him unless you peeled a layer or two off you would think much was wrong. (IE some professional that does a 1/2 hour assessment) I got a statement cos of the language in the end and the rest of his needs added up enough of a case for the LA to cave in.
Ask for a language assessment for your son. It may be that he is on the Autism Spectrum. And Receptive language may be where his need lies. If he ends up on the first percentile then you have some hard evidence to push for more targeted help. Keep on trucking youll get there and go with your gut. Parents know intuitively whats up with our kids and not teachers who think that cos a child doesn't act like Raymond Babbit that he cant be on the spectrum or show traits.
xx Im not by any means suggesting that your child has ASD as Ive not met him but wat ever difficulties wityh accessing the curriculum he has you know he cant help it so something is !!!Thanks for this LBB :A You are right re the punishment, we have had it for the last 2 years - he misses a lot of class treats for a combination of "silly" behaviours, I think that there must be a better way to deal with him - but I don't know what it is so am asking for help. He has problems focusing for long when writing, it's like pulling teeth getting him to write a sentence but he loves to read and is very articulate (like a grown man with his vocabulary) but does have a slight speech defect which they say should correct itself. The class has kids with much more severe problems but I have to do what I can for my ds.
Your dh sounds like a fantastic teacher, you can tell the ones that have empathy and relate to the kids well :T Ds teachers are ok but they have so much to deal with my ds is way down their list of priorities...but top of mine
I once had some "expert" observe ds in class and he came back with the observation that he did not particularly stand out...but another child did  10 minutes observation was useless for my ds as there are some kids in there who have got really obvious issues and he does not stand out because he is polite and thoughtful. He is a space invader though  He likes to stroke the other kids hair and touch their faces but not always in a 10 minute time frame.
I can relate to what you are saying Busylizzie, ds had on teacher who insisted ds behaviour was no different than his peers - yet he missed 80% of class treats even though she says he is a well behaved little boy. The 2 don't match in my book. The senco at the school does say though that there is something about him but she can't put her finger on what it is. Fingers crossed he gets his assesment and they get it right, it seems odd that I want him to get a diagnosis but I feel that it is the only way that he will get the support that he needs.
£432,000 for the doggies justgiving page :j Sad that it took this to get them some much needed funding but us Brits are a lovely bunch of people :T (apart from a certain 14 year old yob!)

My heart goes out to the suffering that these poor dogs have gone through but my heart also goes out to the child who (allegedly) committed arson.
He is a child and we know nothing about his circumstances but already there are calls for his head:o
Some children in this country are raised in the most unimaginable circumstances. Poverty, abuse and neglect can warp and scar a child for life. Some live in conditions not fit for an animal.I don't believe that people are born evil but people can perform evil acts. That doesn't mean that we should write them off.
I hope he is getting the hugs he needs right now.
TM, I agree completely. I am a massive animal lover, I have been actively involved in animal rescue for over 20 years. I am so upset about this sickening act and the deaths of those poor dogs.
But I do not want the child responsible harmed. I would like him to understand the consequences of his actions. I would also like him to undergo a psychiatric assessment as fire starting is well known amongst young people with mental health problems.
I really hope that he didn't do this deliberately to harm the dogs. Whatever his motives hating and harming him will not bring those dogs back.
My heart goes out to those poor babies and all the staff and volunteers involved in their care. So many broken hearts and so many "if onlys.""I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it for I shall not pass this way again."

Mhoc, your son sounds amazing. The good teachers far outweigh the bad IMO. I hope my ds can reach his potential but I think he will need some support - not buckets full but some...
Glad you managed to get your ds some support later on in his school life, some kids don't have parents that will make the effort to get their kids what they need re their education.
He is very much a force of nature.
However bad things got I always fought for him and he has immense confidence - the words, cant, wont, impossible, its will never happen are just not in his vocab
He is the most practical person I know - when he was 10, year 5 and still at junior he used to walk to do a music group after school about 15 mins from school - it was estate roads so no worries about traffic. One Wednesday he arrived and waited but the class had been cancelled and we didn't know. So he waited a suitable amount of time and then walked home - this was before mobiles so he had to wait a suitable amount of time and then make a decision himself what to do next, wait or to go home.
Its about 25 mins away - first time he had done this cross a major road with a crossing and traffic lights, walk 15 mins along the main road and then cross to get to our lane, then 10 mins with no paving and heavy fast moving traffic.
Then he just rolled in the door :T“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. Every day will allow you, --will invite you to add something to the pleasure of others, --or to diminish something of their pains.”0 -

I bought some Martini Asti Spumante in T's a couple of days ago. Compared nicely with A, £8.49 v £6. Just bought some more but A's has now gone up to £7.75 but compared to Morries at £6.49. I got 2 bottles + 4 small bottles to equal 6 for the 25% off. The Asti did work out at £3.88 a bottle but now it's £4.37. Still a good price. My mum's 100 next month so a cheap acceptable drink for a small toast which she'll like.0
