regarding children who struggle with the education system, its very much a one size fits all policy.

My youngest found primary and junior very difficult and the SENCO was the head and a really horrible woman.
But both the year 6 teachers were saints and between them he got through the dreaded SATS.
In high school the SENCO was another saint and he went above and beyond what was needed to help. He got him assessed for all and everything but he just did not fit any criteria so there was no extra funding.
College was another leap forward but after a bit of settling down in the first years he thrived - I've heard this numerous times, children like this who struggle with the school system would really do better if they went to college at 14 to do their GCSEs and all of the practical things that they excel at.
He did the foundation course and then did another 2 year course and got best student in his year twice.
Then he decided to do the 2 year foundation uni course - same campus. By now he was unstoppable - 3 days at uni with a practical day, 2 days working and 2 days walking or climbing or whatever on his spare days, scout young leader and ATC adult instructor etc.
In the final year of uni all of a sudden they found funding for him - he had an assessment which we had to pay £150 for but then he got a weekly tutor to help make sense of his written work and a huge budget to spend on computer equipment
He started applying for work and on his 2nd interview he got offered a full time position, finished his final uni assessment in 6 weeks, left home and started work.
This is a child who, at the age of 4, one teacher said would be impossible to educate

Mhoc, your son sounds amazing. The good teachers far outweigh the bad IMO. I hope my ds can reach his potential but I think he will need some support - not buckets full but some...

Glad you managed to get your ds some support later on in his school life, some kids don't have parents that will make the effort to get their kids what they need re their education.

    Loved reading this :T:T

Makes me sad reading the problems that people are having :( I have to say my experience has been mostly positive. All the teachers we've dealt with over the years have gone well above and beyond. My battles came down to funding and nothing else.
This was solved by stalking the LEA, being relentless and never taking no for an answer :D I once heard staff at the special needs dept at the LEA arguing over who was going to speak to me this time......I was supposed to be on hold but someone forgot to press the right button :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

All I can say to those going through it is keep fighting. It can be soul destroying but worth it. My DS now has one to one support full-time, IT equipment to use in class and all the other support he needs, and he does need it. He only has it because I fought like a demon to get it.

Our lovely old staffy Sally. We got her as an already old lady from Manchester Dogs Home and had her for 5 years before she went to doggy heaven. She was a beautiful little thing with an amazing sweet nature.

So good to hear that you got what your ds needed fc :) It does give hope that my ds will get the help he needs, I just have to keep pushing. Trouble is - I'm a lover not a fighter :rotfl:and I normally don't like to be too vocal but I have to get over it and speak up. This is far too important to roll over and be trodden on.

I am about to post the most controversial thing I've ever written on here.

My heart goes out to the suffering that these poor dogs have gone through but my heart also goes out to the child who (allegedly) committed arson.
He is a child and we know nothing about his circumstances but already there are calls for his head:o
Some children in this country are raised in the most unimaginable circumstances. Poverty, abuse and neglect can warp and scar a child for life. Some live in conditions not fit for an animal.I don't believe that people are born evil but people can perform evil acts. That doesn't mean that we should write them off.

I hope he is getting the hugs he needs right now.

Thanks for saying what I was thinking :T

Most of the posts today have been about quality of care/education/understanding given to children which is in stark contrast to the calls for this boys head considering we know nothing of him (including whether he's guilty or not)
