Am I Expecting Too Much?

Type your reg into webuyanycarforlessthanthetradevalue.com and add a few hundred, thats where his trade price will be.
Its a numbers game, or making you "feel" like you are getting a good deal. Like dropping £500-£750 on his screen price (which already has some built in wiggle room) or giving more for your car than the trade-in value.
If they retail your car for say £5.5K, we will not be giving you any near £5K.
As said before, sell it privately and buy one privately. Private sellers are more likely going to take a hit when you put 5 figures in cash on the table."Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -
Am I likely to get a better deal than that somewhere else? I will admit to being a bit surprised that they were so inflexible considering that I told him I wanted to buy the car.
A common misconception that
(a) "its a buyers market" - no. Its not. Good cars are hard to find, and dealers wont give them away.
(b) "A dealer MUST do every deal" - no. If hes not making money hes not going to be in business, so he has clearly declined to do the deal.
He knocked £500 off the price of his car and was giving you trade value for yours. How was that inflexible?0 -
Actually, if my car is worth £5k to a dealer, then they won't have been giving me any discount at all.
£16995 minus the £500 discount offered = £16495
Less the part exchange car screen price £5450 assume they take £5000 ( which would be a bigger % discount than offered on the Mazda to me) = £11495
Less the £10000 I would have financed = £1495
So we were actually only £1500 apart and I'd have met him halfway on that.
Or have I worked it out wrong?
Its worth £5K to a dealer, retail price on his forecourt, NOT trade price to you.0 -
he said I will give you £700.00 more for your part ex if you pay me the screen price for the Orion that just summed it up for me
Roughly translated - "you cant have your cake and eat it"
You can either get the big discount up front, and trade price for yours, OR a big price for yours but no discount.0 -
Well there is a link a bit upthread for a car that is identical to mine (same year and mileage) for sale with a dealer at £5450. I expect he would take £5000. That's where my price of £5000 came to me. I didn't expect him to give me £5000 for my car but to perhaps lower the screen price of the Mazda and if he had done that, I would have upped my offer by some and we could have done a deal, I'm sure.
Smoke and mirrors but he was so completely inflexible.
He knocked £500 off the price of his car? Hows that being inflexible?
He quoted you a trade price for yours, which left a price to change of approx £13,000.
You were at £10,000.
He doesnt have enough movement in his profit margin to bridge that and clearly you gave him the impression you werent going to move, so what did you expect to happen?0 -
He did try to up sell me to a new one. Based on the 'how much is your monthly budget' idea. The thing is, that's not what I look at.
I think you're all correct. I will sell my car privately and then either find a private sale or go to a dealer without a part exchange and see what happens. Perhaps I will wait until January when it's freezing cold. I'm not in any particular hurry.
I have to say though that the 'you're currently driving a boring car so I don't think you're going to buy a sports car' argument is among the more spurious excuses I've heard.

I think its more the Mazda dealer is unlikely to retail your car - he'll just pass it on to another trader.
If you're in no rush definitely advertise it privately and see what happens. Decent enough cars and the low miles will help sell it.0 -
You'll save a packet on an MX 5 if you wait for the bad weather, especially private.
Get a hard top and they are fine in winter, never driven one in snow though so that might be fun!Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080 -

Hard tops are for wimps!
The hood is exceptional anyway and doesnt leak.
I've had 4 so far and they're great little cars. Nicely tail happy in the snow if thats what you want to do
Had mine out in the snow with the hood down0 -
I particularly liked that you could lower the hard top in 19 seconds. Very impressed."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0
