What colour do you want then?

In order of preference, grey, dark blue, silver, maroon.

Can I ask. If I went in with cash in My pocket, what could I expect to pay?

'Cash' sales aren't really seen as anything special by dealers anymore - they'd much rather customers take out credit through them so they earn commission from the lender, so an extra line of income for them.

It does though show you are a serious buyer - if you basically pulled out £xk and said take it or leave it, and seriously mean it & be willing to walk away, then seeing the cash may make them think twice before letting you walk. Psychological technique I suppose.
But cash in itself doesn't really provide a benefit for them.

So in effect, I would have to pay £12000 plus my car valued by them at £3600 making a total of £15600?

Without looking at prices of other dealers and without knowing the salesman its hard to say what they'd accept. But even without that info, asking for them to cut the price by a fifth sounds very unrealistic unless they've advertised a £15k car for £20k which they don't seem to have done.

OK. I did say I would use their finance if it made a difference. I can get the loan from my bank for 4%, I got an agreement at that rate this morning before I went shopping. He said their finance was 3.5% and so it made no difference to him because he made no money out of it.

He showed me an Experian check that said three figures depending on the condition. Mine is in almost mint condition and the top figure was about £3600.

Not sure what I could ask if I put a sign in the car window.

not knowing the exact spec and model of your car it is hard to give a price

have a look at sites like auto trader e bay and the likes and see what people and dealers are asking for your car, this will give you a good idea of what you can ask for your car

My car is a black i30 comfort manual, 09 plate with 22500 miles. No marks bumps or scratches. I have owned it since June 2010 when it had 4997 miles on the clock. I don't do many miles at all and it only has as many as it does because my son was at university and I used it to visit him.

    anything like that?

if so, that one is from a dealer so pitch yours at £4995.00 and expect £4500 so about a grand more than trading it in, your car may sell quickly but it might just as easily hang around

as above cash used to be king but not to a big franchised car dealership they would much rather tie you up to a very expensive finance package as they will make far more out of this than a cash sale

Thanks Force Ten, that is identical to mine. I also have the full Hyundai service history and both keys (the salesman today made a big thing about having two keys.)

I think I might stick a for sale notice in the window.

Thanks for all your help, folks.

Actually, if my car is worth £5k to a dealer, then they won't have been giving me any discount at all.

    £16995 minus the £500 discount offered = £16495

Less the part exchange car screen price £5450 assume they take £5000 ( which would be a bigger % discount than offered on the Mazda to me) = £11495

    Less the £10000 I would have financed = £1495

So we were actually only £1500 apart and I'd have met him halfway on that.

Or have I worked it out wrong?
