:j Woot-woot! I got my 4½ stone award at SW this morningDD is driving me mad wanting to put up the bookcases so before I do anything else we're going to do that. That'll mean the books can come down out of my room, the chest of drawers in the livingroom for my room can go up, then my home "office" can be set up, allowing more stuff currently in my bedroom to come down :rotfl: Hopefully I can get that all done by 2pm.
So you will have achieved your September goals by this evening, nicki!2 down!
Great photos - your lot are so photogenic, pigpenMy apples have started ripening and dropping.. I have 6 at the moment and about 20 on the trees.. some are huge... I want to prepare and freeze as they ripen to use all together in a pie or crumble.. or several small ones as only OH will eat them.. so.. do I peel/core/slice and par boil (with sugar if necessary) and freeze?? Then defrost, fling in pie and then oven??
For crumbles, you could freeze the cooked, sweetened apples in small Chinese-takeaway-type foil trays (one large apple will fill one foil tray for a large single or smaller double portion of crumble) - then also prepare and freeze a big batch of crumble topping. When you want a crumble you only need to put topping on the apple and bung it in the oven to brown - by the time it's ready, the apple should be nicely defrosted and heated through, provided that you haven't filled the tray too deep in the first place. Or for a bigger crumble empty two or three trays into a deep pie dish and allow to defrost before adding topping.
If making pies, you will need to defrost and drain the apples before putting them inside the pastry case (especially if doing pastry above and below) otherwise you will get a very soggy bottom :rotfl:

Question for bakers..

I don't eat apples but it seems a shame to waste these monsters.
Yep, that would work. Keep extra liquid to a minimum. You could prep in a huge batch but freeze in portion/pie sizes.
Ionofan's suggestion of freezing crumble topping separately is excellent BTW and the 'bottom' of the crumble won't then go soggy.Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY"I would like more sisters, that the taking out of one, might not leave such stillness" Emily DickinsonJanice 1964-2016

Hgenist done, carpet samples picked up and new lovely dark green cardi bought as a treat for me because I feel deserve it.
Going to put washing on the line.
DS2 is going to rub down and paint the side shed doors this week, will save DH a job and I will then get DS2 some clothes for uni as a reward.
Time to think about luch for DS3, he has a haircut in a while and make sure he is set for school. He now want to go swimming with a friend later but I think the pool will be back to lesson timetables. The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -

I would freeze apple in portions and get out and make to pie or crumble as required.. I hate frozen soggy pastry and crumble so wouldn't inflict it on anyone else.. I don't like soggy

Belated anniversary congratulations to Dancemum and Dancedad.
Well, as they say, the best laid plans of mice and men....:wall:
I'd hoped to try and follow the official lists this week, to see how I got on; but Fate has conspired against me - today is scuppered.
Mr LW came home last night and announced that he'd be working from home today, and that he'd an appointment with the Fang Farrier at 11:45 this morning. He's had toothache for a couple of days - this is unusual for him, he's meticulous about his teeth, and rarely gets any trouble; he also said the gum was inflamed, so I did wonder (or more accurately fear) that he'd got an abcess.
Anyways, he wanted me to go along with him, in case he felt groggy after treatment; it's a 15-mile journey to the dentist, and we didn't want him driving home if he felt rough, so my plans for Flying have - well, flown! I did drive back (he said he felt ok, but when I said "Are you sure?" he handed me the keys). And of course, it's kinda knocked the stuffing out of me. Oh well, there's always next week....
Anyways, he's had the offending tooth removed - but get this: it's a baby-tooth that should have fallen out over 50 years ago!!
The dentist has given it to him, wrapped up in a tissue - I don't know what we're supposed to want with it!_pale_ But we've decided we shall give it back to Mother Earth as part of our Samhain ritual.:D
Poor man, he can't have any lunch, not even a cup of tea right now, as he'd spill more than he'd drink. Good job I persuaded him to have a couple of bananas mid-morning, before he went.:o And no, I haven't had lunch either - I'd feel too mean sitting here eating when he can't.
I've made a Shepherd Spy for tonight's dins (enough for tomorrow too);) so hopefully that'll be easy for him to cope with once the anaesthetic's worn off.If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
But Lamewolf, it's obvious what should happen with the tooth and why the dentist gave it to Mr LW.
It should be put under Mr LW's pillow for the toothfairy to deal with tonight. Obvs.
Today is not going well. The butcher didn't do the gammon as he said he would, as in, didn't chop it up, didn't prepare it and didn't remember it.Better is good enough.0 -
Afternoon Flyladies
A quiet afternoon here, in terms of volume, as my boys are back to school today; DS2 didn't want me to come into the classroom with him this morning which is a first, he has just started in Year 5 but is a real sook and likes me to come in a settle him still. Hoping that this is the start of a more independent him
Have been to the paid stuff for a few hours, cleaned all the windows in a big 4-bed house on top of all my usual 'stuff', my arms are aching now, clearly out of practise!
Stopped off at the plumbers merchants and picked up pipe and joints to fix the leaky overflow, fitted them in five minutes and I now have a dry and functional cupboard under my hob :T DH was all for ringing a plumber, I think I deserve the £50 call out charge for my efforts
My washing basket is now EMPTY  All caught up on the holiday stuff plus what we've accumulated since getting home. Two loads are drying and once they're ready I'll tackle the little pickle of ironing I have.
Lynne, thank you for the advice re: the scabies _pale_ Trouble is, DSD's mum has self diagnosed rather than taken her to the docs and apparently had the correct ointment in her possession so DSD has been slathered. I'm not sure where that leaves the rest of us -- I don't want to pay for OTC treatment for the other six members of the household if it's NOT scabies, but it doubt my doc will prescribe it for us en masse without having seen evidence of infection. So I either have to stump up the ££ which could be for nothing, or play the waiting game and see if any of the rest of us befall the same fateDSD doesn't actually have a rash at present, she's just very itchy all over and her mum is a well known hypochondriac so I have my suspicions about her diagnosis, but at the same time I don't want to end up itching for weeks either. Grr!
ETA: just looked at the ointment; each person requires two treatments of 30g, and each tube is £9  That'd be more than £100!!
Time for a quick brew before DS1 gets home. I also need to text DSIL and see how my nephews are getting on, first day at big school for her youngest, and first day back in almost a year for her eldest who has had all manner of health issues. Fingers crossed she hasn't had "the call" to come and collect either, or indeed both, of them…0
