Hello NOA -
Aside from all that has already been brillantly and helpfully posted, esp. by those who have been there/done it - I'm going have a tiny growl at you instead.
What's this bit of nonsense? -
'rather than feeling like a failure and having let my children down so badly'
There's not a single soul on mse who will let you get away with that!
Instead, we all go like this - :j, because 'just wish I had read the info on this site earlier!' means you win tonight's Better Late Than Never free Lifetime Membership.:D You'll be advising others before long, too.
'but I spend so much time helping others (which I love doing and get a real buzz from) that I neglect on affairs....it's a way of forgetting and feeling 'useful'' is classic displacement activity. We'll all help you keep focussed. It doesn't mean you cease those good things, it means you do them for straightforward reasons.
You'll also find that this great game of saving becomes addictive.
Well done on those extra hours. That kernel of knowledge/fixed income has value financially and in self-esteem.
I'm glad Stepchange are on board. CAPUK, in my siggie, are the charity I know of and direct peeps to - Martin rates them highly too.
Strongly approve of your working Mr T vouchers as you do. Have the children been trained up in wombling? Discarded receipts with barcodes, 2 per day, can be added to your total and abandoned 'x off your next shop' chits are handy too. I have one for tomorrow:).I have always kept this from a 2009 pm reply from Martin:'"For as long as I've been doing this I have never seen a debt situation that isn't solvable. It may not be easy, and it will take time, but there's always a solution."Take it to bed with you, your very own closing and waking thought pillow.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

What a magic quote from :money:. Awesome, thanks for sharing Ampersand.
There is definitely wriggle room in that sig. Those insurances , even that breakdown cover. Heating of £185 - per month??!!! Eek. I have a draughty 4 bed Victorian house and my gas bill is just going up to £50pm.
Hope others can help, but think there is wriggle room. I really do.
Great news re the £2.5k. Excellent progress.MFiT-T4 Member No. 96 - 2022 is my MF goal

I would second youneedabudget.com, I bought the software at $54. well worth every cent,..er penny. I haven't noticed going without the last two months ive been using it but have paid off over £1500 debt on a single, pretty average income. I actually look forward to using it its such a nice piece of software.Debt [STRIKE]06/14[/STRIKE] 09/14 : [STRIKE]MBNA: £252[/STRIKE]

Life insurance ... is that really per month? I pay £25 per month (and feel guilty because I'm not earning just now), and think that's high.
Anyway your monthly life insurance sum would be better put towards your debt, which is actually affecting your health.
Also, definitely lay it on the line with the Bursar, as I know loads of parents who pay reduced fees due to lower than previous earnings.
Well done on posting, and also on cutting down the food bills, both are great first steps. Think about batch cooking soups, and try making dough for pizzas (and bread) it costs pennies and tastes so much better.
Uniforms for Independent schools cost a fortune - can you sell outgrown items? Is there a pre-loved shop at school, if not please suggest it to the PTA as a way of fundraising for them (and keeping your costs down).
Vinyl records seem to be making a comeback, and there's definitely a healthy market for them. What would you get if all you got was what you were thankful for?1
