moving in with girlfriend

Hi all, ive just moved in to my girlfriends flat,she is receiving JSA,housing benefit and help with the council tax.I am working 35 hours a week at £6.31 an hour.We obviously want to do things properly but not sure what to do or who to see.can you please advise me on which way to go and what we may be entitled too, ie working tax credits and possible continued help with council tax etc .

First of all notify all the benefit departments of the change of circumstances.

Any benefits you are awarded will now be based on joint income and savings.

You can see what you are eligible for by putting your details into the calculator on https://www.entitledto.co.uk.

Unless your girlfriend is receiving contribution based JSA she will lose this because of your income.

as for claiming working tax credits,is it me, or my girlfriend to claim as the flat is in her name or is it simply a joint claim,

I live with a working partner and I am not entitled to any benefits which are means tested.

You will probably find she will loose her housing benefit and council tax benefit.

When I phoned the DWP to ask if I was entitled to any money they said no because of my working partner is supposed to support me.

We even tried to claim WTC but his income again meant we could not receive anything.

Sorry for the bad news, but she will loose most of her benefits.

I have lost well over £100 per week since I moved in with my partner.

I now wish I had stayed living on my own as I would have been financially better off ::++((

Sounds like moving in a girlfriend would be even more complicated than moving in a lodger!

No it is not. It is much less complicated. You may not like the consequences but they are not complicated.

However, your household income is likely to have increased and you have someone to split household bills with as well.

Am I the only person that thinks its really sad when you see people say 'I wish I hadnt of moved in with my partner because I would have been better off finacially if I hadnt' ...?? ... I just feel like it shouldnt be all about money ... I know people will think different but I just think its a shame that people would rather live apart to save a few ££'s here and there rather than live together to 'be together' if that makes sense?

I'm sorry OP I dont really know a great deal about benefits but I know even if I'm not working we recieve no benefits at all (apart from child benefits) but thats because my husbands wage is above the threshold ... He is on quite a bit more than you though - you can do an online calculator ...

Why is it sad that many people don't live together and are better off? Having enough money to live on is the most important thing and it's better to be in different houses than the shame of "living in sin".
