  • Apologies if this has already been posted but I didn't have time to read through all ten pages of posts! Note this is .com and USA related but I bet it's no coincidence.

Amazon.com launch new Visa Rewards card
"Users of the card will get 3% Back from Amazon purchase, 2% at petrol station, restaurants and drug stores and 1% on all other purchases".

Interesting, as better than the old Amazon MC; but it may be that US reward cards are normally better than we have, I don't know.
  • I am also registered with Amazon.com (US) and see that I can apply for a card on that site but wonder if I would be able to use it in the UK or even on amazon.co.uk

Course you will. But with the currency conversion from £ to $, youll not be getting a good deal. And will you pass US credit checks?

  • Perhaps I'll wait and see if they start an amazon.co.uk card!

"However users of the US card will get no Back rewards for purchases on overseas Amazon sites (e.g. EU sites)."

And in any case you'll have to be a US resident to apply for a US credit card.

MBNA's staff are as useless as ever and clueless as to what's going on. When I've rang or emailed them, they have completed contradicted their colleagues several times. To give just one example, I have just been told I would get a new card in two years time when my current Amazon one expires, whereas in the letter I received a few weeks ago I was informed I'd get a new - MBNA - card before the end of October. Considering the demise of the Amazon card, which is the best card to apply for, with the most generous points? I've read the previous posts, but everyone's got a different recommendation :) The places I make my biggest payments to don't accept American Express, so I'm looking for a Visa or Mastercard.
  • Everyone has a different recommendation because it depends on each individuals spending patterns.

As far as I can see, if you're avoiding Amex there are 3 main contenders...

Santander 123 - Good if majority of spend is on travel and supermarkets (3% and 1% respectively, £24 annual fee).
Tesco - Only 0.25% if points used as is. More likely you can double these. In some cases you can even quadruple your points (equivalent to 1%), but often only at places you can find offers for anyway (e.g. nobody should ever pay full price for theme park tickets).
CapitalOne Classic Extra - Simplest straight cash back card. 0.5% plus potential £10 yearly bonus which you should get if you're using a cash back card correctly anyway. Also no overseas load.

For myself, approximately two thirds of my spending is in places that take Amex and I spend very little on travel. My new setup therefore will be...

Lloyd's choice rewards Amex (for places that take it). Points work out at 1.5% and can be taken as Amazon vouchers. £24 annual fee.
    CapitalOne Classic Extra everywhere else.

By my calculations, this will work out at very close to 1% for myself taking into account all spending and fees.

But as I say, it depends on your personal situation.
