    Hi IA

I just thought I would put in my two-penn’orth regarding the potty training issue! In my experience children do it when they’re ready and not before! That is not to say that you can’t keep trying occasionally to find out if she is ready or not, but please don’t get stressed if she isn’t ready yet. I speak from bitter experience!

My DS (who I think I have mentioned before is autistic – though high-functioning) did not ‘get it’ until he was 3½ and we had been trying since he was 2. My then (in hindsight, interfering) next door neighbour advised trying from that age and DS just wasn’t ready and I got very stressed about it. So I did what I said above and just tried him occasionally to see if he was, though I confess I still got stressed over it. At the age of 3½ we tried again and he was ready then and the result was that he was dry day and night within about 2 weeks.

It sounds like she is already getting the idea, so I doubt she will be as late as my darling child was! Though having said that, I know of some children who were later – one of DS’s classmates in primary school was still in nappies when he started school at the age of 5 and he wasn’t even special needs as far as I am aware!

    Hi

Good luck with the kids but dont wish the early years away. I could not wait until my youngest DD started school full time as i would have the day to myself. My god how i miss the time we used to have together on our own having lunch and the park at lunchtime. It is not like Sky +. you cannot rewind. This is coming from someone who has 3 children with 2 years between each and did not get a proper nights sleep for 8 YEARS

    YM

When my youngest brother was born I was not yet 3 and we had another brother in between us. Can you imagine?! 3 children under 3!

PigginSkint, I hope you don't mind asking but do you know if there is any link between autism and difficulties with potty training? My ds is possibly (well, definitely in my opinion, but still awaiting diagnosis) on the autism spectrum, and he isn't yet dry overnight. He's 7 years old and has been dry through the day since about age 2 and a half.

  • Hey snaggles when I did my autism training for when I was a nursery nurse they did say that it's quite common to experience delayed potty training or difficulties with being dry day and night...

Thanks for that - that's so weird that I never made the connection before. I will add it to my 'list' then (I'm trying to put together information for his autism assessment next month, including huge long observation forms and stuff).

Blimey! I haven't been on the site for a few weeks (I don't function well during term time  ) and I can't believe what you've been up to. Is that picture of THE guitar from freecycle? If not it's gorgeous but if it is its gorgeous and amazing! Well done on getting rid of Citi too, you obviously hated them, you're an inspiration

I am a great believer in STRICT routine for children-all children are different and some will sleep without having to be 'taught' but I have found many things to work thru trial and error

    1. black out blinds-essential
    2. nightly routine-bath, book and bed-NO TV after bath, calms voices etc. and tea around 5-5.30. Both mine have slept 7-7 since 10 weeks and we've always followed this routine.
    3. Fresh air-kids need to get outside everyday-it tires them out!
    4. controlled crying-it's hard, not everyone can do it but it worked for us-I'd go in and comfort but never pick up, talk, etc. We also watered down formula so that they were'nt getting as many calories in trhe nihgt, would be hungrier in the day so would eat more and sleep better
    5. Naps-very important-until at least 2 years old. No naps=being overtired and then unable to sleep at night

Just my tuppence worth. I am a 'hardcore' Mom but I needed my sleep-depression is always worse if you don't get sleep! (Trust me, I know...)

Anyway sweets, sorry for being so bossy...

Bunny, I so didn't want to be the hardcore mum, but my DD didn't sleep through the night until 10 months. HV (I think) said it was just habit, she didn't need feeding in the middle of the night. So I tried the old controlled crying. On the first night I went to her a couple of times, settled her and went back to my bed and then :o:o:o I fell asleep (I was TIRED!) so I have no idea how much longer she was crying that night. :o

She slept through after that, and she is 20yrs old now :rotfl:
