If you're cycling, I'd definitely recommend a road-bike rather than a mountain bike - 10 miles goes so much easier even on a basic road bike0

Brilliant. That's a great attitude, so good luck in the job. I suspect that you'll find ways to make the transport work once you are there.0 -

For your information, I am also starting a new job next week. So I have "succeeded", as you have put it too..
Well good, I hope it goes well. Please don't take the negative attitude from here with you, I'd not want to see you back out of work in a few weeks.0 -

I think for myself and don't automatically think everything an employer does is OK.
Better to be negative in these situations than just be totally accepting of everything. I strongly believe zero hours contracts should be outlawed, and for good reasons I feel.0 -

And by implication, of course, you mean that I don't...0 -

The exercise of a bike will do your fitness and depression good. Also the zero hours thing is probbably a little irrelevant as the business is busy enough to hire(and trade for these places is always reasonable). Ride for august and september and earn enough for an alteritive in the winter.Or not take it. Up to you.
So why do they not offer a proper contract then if they are busy, need the staff regularly (and therefore presumably making a decent amount of money)?0 -
Because the catering industry very often use ZHC's nowadays so you see that is the standard in the industry at the moment0

But a company should be wanting to make their company a good one to work for (they certainly try and get this message across enough when they are advertising for staff).
They should be trying to ensure their company is a better one to work for than their competitors. I would have thought that an easy way to do this is by offering proper contracts if few of their competitors do.
A company need to sell and to make profits in order to survive. A key part of this is making sure they have motivated staff.0 -

What happens when you end up going br?
What happens when you maybe can't then get other work, after all you potentially have work, no-one betters them self with a zero hours contract, you become the accepting of any old rubbish although fortunately a lot of employers are travel aware and actually don't want their workers risking life & death fortunately
All of the above was a reality for me in 2012 and I still bare the scars today, v.strong views
Find something else, no way would I walk into a zero hours contract, seen to many tears, even a pawn shop as an interviewee understood the great hardship that is zero hours, can't you check out these types of places even!!
The OP appears to be a young person who want to actually get on in life rather than sitting at home doing nothing.
I respect him/her for that and find your attitude appaling.0
