Please, ignore him. It's great that you've got a job offer, and that you are motivated to make it work. [Text removed by MSE Forum Team]0 -
I live and work in a rural area. I work in catering on a zero hour contract, as do most of my co workers. Some weeks we get just 10 hours, this week I've done 30.
I'm lucky in that I am only 4 and a half miles to work and since I passed my test I can drive. Before that I walked.
Most of my co workers don't drive. There are no buses at all on Sundays and only about 4 a day weekdays. One guy has to travel 17 miles in, no car
We all chip in and ferry each other in and out. Even the boss was away down to pick the guy up yesterday morning to get him in for 9am. If he's on late and will miss his last train ( 8 miles to the station) we let him go and one of us drops him down and comes back to finish the cleaning
Personally I would give the job a try. Yes it's going to be tough at first having to cycle in and out , but you may find there are others working with you who drive and can drop you home either foc or petrol money ( got to be cheaper then a taxi)
The job will help you feel more positive about life and boost your self esteem. I'm pretty certain you can still sign on as it's a zero hour contract. The weeks you top 16 hours you sign off. However speak to your job adviser to get the correct information
I do think in areas where unemployment are high, most people tend to help each other stay in work. A lot of the younger people I work with have no worries about ringing their parents, brothers or sisters to come collect them at midnight
Good luck
Oh and as an aside, when I was younger and living and working in London , I used to cycle year round to get into work for 5am starts (12 miles each way). The hills were a nightmare at the start but you soon manage them. Wet weather gear, fluorescents , and good gloves, socks and a hat are needed.0 -
The exercise of a bike will do your fitness and depression good. Also the zero hours thing is probbably a little irrelevant as the business is busy enough to hire(and trade for these places is always reasonable). Ride for august and september and earn enough for an alteritive in the winter.Or not take it. Up to you.0

Right sod it I have decided to take the job, I can cycle when I am on evenings & get the bus when I am on days, sorted, then when I have enough money get myself a moped or get my driving licence sorted
Gonna go out and have a cycle around to get the feel for cycling again, and I am looking into the best route into Rotherham at the moment
ZHC is not perfect, but it gets me out there & as others have said I can always look for another job in the meantime, gonna ring the manager on Wednesday & hopefully get the paperwork signed on Thursday, then I am employed (at long last!), oh it feels so good to say that finally0 -
OP it is great to read someone from Rotherham actually not wanting to be on benefits - all most of the people here seem to care about is their benefits and thats it. Have you tried to apply for the new Tesco? They are needing staff, better pay too!0

Thanks, I spoke to the manager at the interview & he said that I could continue with my volunteering (at The Rotherham Hospice Shop) on a Saturday, but he may want me to do Saturday Evening, but thats not a problem, also I didn't know that Tesco were recruiting yet0 -

Hmm I can't seem to find anything, but I'm sure on the boards they have around the building site it said about jobs, whether they had a special link to a specific site or not I'm not sure! Worth a nosy if you're around it though! They open on 13th November now so can't be that far to recruiting. Plus KFC on your CV now will be a help as it's usually easier to find work when you're all ready in it I've heard!0 -
Cheers, I will deffo look into it when I am in town on Thursday, I applied for a position in the Balby Tesco's store anyway0

Please, ignore him. It's great that you've got a job offer, and that you are motivated to make it work. Do not think that his views are in any way sensible, or normal, and please, don't take them on board. He is the sort of person who hates to see others succeed where he cannot, and posts accordingly.
No, you're talking about yourself.
For your information, I am also starting a new job next week. So I have "succeeded", as you have put it too. [Text removed by MSE Forum Team]
PS Topaz: you've made your decision by the sounds of it so good luck to you and I hope it works out.0 -
Congrats, Matt, where you gonna be working if I may ask0
