As a keen cyclist who often does cycle to work (18 miles) there is no way I would do it in adverse weather or the dark (roads aren't lit) I would rather spend money on travel and take less of a personal risk.

When on JSA you don't have to accept zero hours, however if you do you can still claim during times when your salary is low due to a lack of hours.

If you had a bicycle, a helmet and a good set of lights give the journey a go to see how you feel.

A bit more effort, but can you do a mixture e.g. bike part of the bus route in the morning, lock bike, catch bus, then taxi to drop you off on the way home and cycle the rest.

Will cut down on the taxi fare, you can build how far you cycle as your fitness improves, and if there is an element of road your concerned about then potentially you could avoid that as well.

You may find that someone on shift will be going in that direction if for example you stopped on the edge of town.

Really it's just a stop gap as the job progresses, and so maybe the case you won't need to cycle in winter.

If OP took on job and then gave it up because of such problems, then he/she would be making themselves unemployed so would probably be sanctioned for 4 weeks.

I'm not a big fan of zero hours contracts, but if I read correctly, it's a 3 month trial, so would probably mean sept/oct/nov in which time you'd probably be able to save up for a scooter.

Within a week or two, your time cycling to work would dramatically reduce. Cycling in the winter isn't as bad as you may think.
If it's 10 miles, you probably get there in around an hour even if you aren't that fit.

The other alternative, go to work earlier on the bus & rather than getting a taxi is hang about until the buses start up again.
It might take a bit longer, but not the end of the world.

Buses dont start up again til 4:30 in the morning not gonna hang around in Rotherham overnight, if you knew Rotherham you would understand tgat statement

Also mattcanary or whatever your name is I did not lnow it was zero hour when I applied do u think I am completely stupid, if you had been unemployed as long as I have u would understand my situation

Other one is to call a couple of taxi companies and see if they offer a discount if it's going to be a regular fare for them.

To be honest, I can't see that KFC would be wanting to take on OP anyway, if they know that he lives 12 miles away from their workplace and currently has no transport other than a bicycle.

From their point of view, they want to know that OP could quickly get into work if they need/want him to work. That is the whole point of zero hours contracts.
  • I have relevant experience having worked at McDonald's and in commercial kitchens before also its not that far if I can work out how to get there and back

    Maybe.
I'm not really trying to rain on your parade. It must be totally demoralising to be out of work for three years.
But I do think you have to seriously consider whether you may be jumping from the frying pan into the fire.
  • Not really sure how I should respond to that, this is the first sniff I havw had of a job in 3 years and pwople think I should not take it as its ZHC I am not sure what to do, got me in a complete quandary as to where to go from here

The whole point is that I dont wanna live on benefits, I hate living on benefits I want a job

Well done for getting the job, I hop it goes wel for you.

Might not be ideal with it being a zero hours contract but your not going to be stuck there as you can still look for work.
