Not entirely correct, my ex-partner and I received a child tax rebate of £2.5k direct into our account, and it arrived in there about two weeks before we received the letter stating that they'd been under paying for a couple of years and had backdated a rebate for us

But one assumes that it had a reference to show the originator of the credit?

The point is that the OP/partner have received money to which they were not entitled and have now been made aware of this fact.

They should therefore repay it, either immediately and in full or by instalments if they have not the means to do otherwise.

I suspect they both knew all along that they have received money they were not entitled to. They now have been told that they aren't the only ones who know, and they must know their game is up.

I must be missing something. An extra 5k in an account and not an eyebrow raised. Just one of those things, one of them must've had it floating around and transferred it in.

So obviously flush with cash. So what's the problem in giving it back? Why is it going to financially ruin you?

If you've been very, very, very silly and kept and spent the 5k. Then all the crying, and hissy fits about changing bank won't help you.

It's actually potentially a criminal matter, so I'd be nice to the bank if I were you.

Good luck with the new bank accounts if they give you a CIFAS 6.

I have just rang the Financial Ombudsman Service and they have logged the complaint and Halifax now need to get in touch and sort it out with us.
The FOS will do nothing unless you have given Halifax up to 8 weeks to resolve your complaint with them. When have you complained to Halifax, and what is their final position on the matter?

You say "Halifax now need to get in touch" - - - didn't you also say they'd been in touch? Isn't their getting in touch the reason for your post here?

What complaint do you have against Halifax?

Just what we need at the moment! I think we will be changing back accounts!
Good luck, given the current dispute, you are likely to be welcome at another bank (not).

    Hi
We genuinely had no idea. They obviously want us to credit them back. It's not like it's just a few hundred it is a lot of money. I'm guessing we will have to pay back somehow but is there anything we can do? :(
Are you saying that you do notice it is not just a few hundred pounds but a lot of money when £5K goes out of your account, but not when it comes in? How do you explain this apparent discrepancy?

May be you should take this matter to the Small Claims Court so that a Judge can pass their verdict. Although the question is what you would want to claim, as you already got £5,000 more than you were entitled to.

As other have said, HMRC will pay direct to your bank if you so request.
Arising from a completed self assessment tax form they come in entitled "HMRC SA" on your bank statement.
HMRC also send a letter to you shortly after confirming the payment has been made with its details.
  • remind's me of that old saying "payback's a !!!!!" :rotfl:

Is it just me that thinks it's slightly strange that we hear stories where somebody has to pay back money when it has been erroneously credited, alongside stories of somebody crediting the wrong account and not getting it back?
  • As it is with all these joke posters they never come back - they are happy to have got so much response to something that did not happen.
    I suspect a troll.

OP, do you honestly think that we are stupid enough to believe all the claptrap you have posted on here.

I think you are just sounding us all out to see how believable it all is.

I really think you got this 5K into your bank, did a few woo hoos, spent it and were stupid enough to think no one at the bank would notice eventually.

As others have said, you have to pay it back. Contact them and set up a payment plan.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
