I cant really understand what the OP is saying.
Halifax mistakenly transferred 5k into the OP account
Halifax is asking for it back
Is that the gist of it?0 -

yes but think the op is worried about how they are going to pay it back.
OP talk to the Halifax and don't panic. It was their mistake not yours.Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A0 -
Sorry OP I take this with a pinch of salt. Always the newbies with the most fantastic stories.0

Sounds like an error from a customer transferring money into a Halifax account and making a mistake with the account number.
I really don't know how you would mistake this for a tax credit, particularly when it said 'Halifax'. Someone paid money into my account in error once, but I phoned up the bank to tell them so it was dealt with quickly.0 -

Can I ask why you think it's a fantastic story? I am only new to the forum and not the website. I certainly don't think it is a 'fantastic story' randomly being told we owe so much.
Thanks for everyone else's advice0 -
... Did the tax rebate turn up separately or not at all?
Have I missed the answer to the above eskbanker's question?I have checked back into last year's statement and it just says credited from HALIFAX
Complaint about what?I have just rang the Financial Ombudsman Service and they have logged the complaint and Halifax now need to get in touch and sort it out with us.
How can this change anything?I think we will be changing back accounts!
You haven't answered a simple question. Can I ask why you think it's a fantastic story?
For a family that check the account together and don't notice an erroneous £5K credit with a questionable reference, it's not a big deal to pay it back.0 -
whats the fos going todo? the bank have not done anything wrongDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

So someone credited £5000 to your joint account 13 months ago?
This payment came from Halifax and was labelled as 'Halifax' on your statement. You thought it may have been a tax rebate? Am I correct?
Surely, a tax rebate would not come under the name of 'Halifax'.
Either way, I'd go and speak to your local branch rather than ringing their national phone number. I'm sure you'll be able to arrange a monthly payment plan. The Financial Ombudsman would not be your 1st port of call here.:grouphug:

Hi
My partner and I hold a joint bank account with Halifax and he received a call from a private number this morning explaining last July they credited our account in error by just over £5000. They then asked if he knew or whether he was expecting a credit similar around that time and he said he was waiting for a tax rebate. He told them he would speak to me as it's a joint account.
The Financial Ombudson's website mentions that previous disputes have been upheld where the customer has been expecting a similar amount to the misapplied credit.
Did you receive 2 separate credits around the same time, in the region of £5000, 1 for the tax rebate and 1 error?0
