It was the example LIR used, yes am ignorant of the originals of random names - I've never heard of said book and I can't say I know much about Spanish names. But that's all irrelevant of the fact only a certain sector of English people would use it as a given today, the only instance of someone with that name nowadays I can think of is Mercedes, a character in Hollyoaks!

    What's your name, buzzybee90?

It's just a normal, run of the mill name. Nothing exceptional.

Your insistence on referring to a well established name as random just because you hadn't heard of it, and indeed the rest of your post would suggest that "chavviness" is far too close to home to be of any comfort to you.

"Mercedes from Hollyoaks" may well be sporting her fictional Spanish granny's name, for all you know.

Obviously there are holes to be picked but I'm really talking about names like: Ashleigh, Jamie (not James), Morgan, Shannon.

I don't believe unisex names to be the chaviest at all, that falls with the Chardonnay, Mercedes, Porsches.

What an odd competition you're judging. I think I'd rather be a chav than a snob!

Yeah, I'm in that neck of the woods, actually. I knew my pals wouldn't fib. One who works in a local authority role makes it clear that there are virtually competitions between staff when they receive pupil lists to find the most hilarious name (not hilarious to their parents or the child, obviously).

They definitely didn't fib! Google Versace McLatchie (seriously, a real person :rotfl:) and their twin/sibling Armani.
The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.

Have fun naming your children Adidas and Burberry.

Or indeed Armani or Versace for a little touch of class.

I'd rather just get on with being me and not worry about what group people were in or thought I belonged in.

I had a very, very loved friend who was a Mercedes.. She would not be old now, was English and was far from vulgar.

I'm sure she was lovely, I personally think the name sounds nice on the ear. But nowadays it would be considered a name chosen by certain types of people, and the OP said no to these sorts of names.

    What's your point? They're surnames.
