Do you need a generator for chav names? Surely the rule of thumb is to take a lovely name that everybody likes then completely change the spelling and pronounciation :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I'm not sure about apps but there are lists online.

I would stick to an old fashioned baby name book, I would hate to be told my name was chosen by an app lol!

Good point. When I saw a toddler photo competition in a newspaper situated in a place of social deprivation, that certainly seemed to be the case, plus using surnames as first names - Bailey, Harley, McKenzie and so forth. There was also a love of hyphens - Ellie-Mae (or probably Elly-May), Gracie-joy (or perhaps Gracee-joi), Elsa-jean (or Elsah-jeen).

A few of my friends work in education and assure me that historical figures and fashion brand names are also an inspiration.

Yes, there are kids called Pocahontas and Armani in my neck of the woods.

Armani's sister is also called after a fashion brand - Versace, I think, though I may have misremembered and perhaps she is Chanel. If she is Versace, I hope that it is pronounced the way it is in Showgirls as 'Vers-Ace' (two syllables, not three).

At my University, there was allegedly a Snowball and a Paddington but this was a middle class thing or perhaps a myth...

According to an economics book, of all things, someone in the US called their child -S-H-I-T-H-E-A-D (pronounced Shy-teed) but that's also been called a myth.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Why would anyone need an app to name a child?

It should be an exciting decision, carefully thought through - part of the pleasure is surely in the research and preparation?

Takeaway_Addict - thanks for suggestion but was after an App so that I could scroll through names when I didn't have Wifi or 3G connection e.g. waiting for midwife appointment. I could maybe search for list as you suggest then download to phone and scroll through later.

    mountainofdebt - interesting suggestion.

BigAunty - def no chav names!!

stir_crazy - thanks, will check out those lists and download to phone for browsing through.

Moomoomama27 - I've got a few books at home but was looking for something I could browse through whilst on the move.

Tiddlywinks - I'm not looking for an app that would randomly choose a name. I'm looking for an app that is similar to the books where they have lists of names with definitions and meanings. Rather than carry the books in my handbag I was hoping for something I could put on my phone and browse through at lunchtimes, waiting for appointments etc. Apologies, I should have made that clearer in my initial post.

Ahh I see. On iTunes there is a free app that looks good, it's called baby names and meanings, might be worth a look if it's compatible with your phone.

oh right - you want an ebook type of thing then!
    why?
we can suggest lots of names on here! believe me, we have chosen loads of babies names in the past few years!
but, you do have to give some info into the type of names you would like.
    Non chav - got that
now, do you like traditional? seasonal? unusual? regional? unisex? (I love suggesting names - My DIL is pregnant and I daren't open my mouth about names - I hate the one she chose for my grandson!) so can I suggest some for you?
