Yeah, I'm in that neck of the woods, actually. I knew my pals wouldn't fib. One who works in a local authority role makes it clear that there are virtually competitions between staff when they receive pupil lists to find the most hilarious name (not hilarious to their parents or the child, obviously).0 -

Are you always so judgemental about people's names?0 -

I don't believe unisex names to be the chaviest at all, that falls with the Chardonnay, Mercedes, Porsches.
Well, there you go, never say never....Someone has finally judged my name to be chavvy! :rotfl:0 -
Has anyone else ever wanted to change their babys name after telling everyone??[/QUOTE]
Yes! 18 months on and I'm still not convinced....even more annoyingly DH wouldn't go for any of my favourites so I compromised...DH has now decided he doesn't want to be part of DS's life any more...wish I'd known that at the time and I've had stood my ground!0 -

Probably, yes. But not just to (what I'd call) chavvy names, but ridiculous ones like North West, honey blossom etc too.
I don't judge the child, the parents! When the whole Katie Hopkins thing came about, almost every single person I spoke to agreed they'd probably think of a Jayden differently to a Katherine before meeting them.0 -

But what's interesting is when some of those judgements seem formed through ignorance of the etymology of names.0 -

Not really. Just because there was a Mercedes is a novel from 150+ years ago, doesn't mean it's not a chavvy name in 2014. Quite a number of biblical names are going that way.0 -

The book is an example of its use, one that people know because its been made into films, and its very, very good, a classic. Its use as a name is far wider, and older, and in continual use since then.0 -

As usual, rank ignorance is the source of all bigotry.
Mercedes is an established Spanish name that has spanned hundreds of years, very much on par with Elizabeth in this country.
Nothing to do with a novel, or indeed a car, at all.0 -

It was the example LIR used, yes am ignorant of the originals of random names - I've never heard of said book and I can't say I know much about Spanish names. But that's all irrelevant of the fact only a certain sector of English people would use it as a given today, the only instance of someone with that name nowadays I can think of is Mercedes, a character in Hollyoaks!0
