My daughter wanted a bouncy castle like her friends but as it was over £90 to hire it so I managed to get out of it,... with her help, she broke her arm so bouncy castles were out of the question!
We did the cake together she loved helping to make it, ice and decorate it. We made it look like a flower and made a marzipan bumble bee...not very realistic but lovely all the same and she had more fun making it than eating it I'm sure. She also helped wrap the pass the parcel and make other food.
The party bags were mainly chocolate from the local cadburys factory shop so very cheap.
At the party we played bingo. We made bingo cards on the computer using clip art pictures instead of numbers, (only because some younger ones were going to be there as well and this way everyone could join in), the kids all loved it and it was the only time they were quiet all after noon.
The mums seemed to like it and it did not cost a fortune. We hired the local town hall for £30 for three hours (because parking is difficult where we live up a small dead-end lane), and this meant we were not so worried about mess as it has wooden floors and we cleaned up very quickly afterwards. My daughter loved it and enjoyed the preparation as much as the day itself.
Go for it...these parties need not be old fashioned if we all do them they will be trendy.
JanIf it aint broke don't fix it!
God bless

I think other Mum's are relieved to see other's having more down to earth parties rather than the trend of latter years of trying to out-do one another or the Keep-Up-With-The-Jones competition!
I agree, I think we'll see more and more down to earth "traditional" style parties in the future.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Oh no! I've just had a horrid flashback of someone wearing maroon velvet pedal pushers & a flouncy "Lady Di" blouse....possibly with a matching maroon velvet waistcoat...............IT WAS ME! Aaaarrrgggghhhhh
Iced gems, party rings, frazzles, chocolate fingers, wotsits, twiglets, battenburg cake & jammie dodgers. Yum!0 -
I am using clear plastic half pint cups instead of party bags because they are cheaper:) got a pack of 15 in the pound shop. Also it means i will be able to see what's inside a lot more easily!Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

My 7yr old just had birthday.
I limited it to 6 friends (He plus bro) =8 total.
The them was ".knights"
I borrowed books from the library to get ideas for games:
1) Shield making (old cereal packets, crayons)
2) "ranking" (pull a pice of paper out of hat, king =4 points....villein =1)
3) Hunt (egg pods hidden in gardenpoints to find, question inside for points)
4) Jousting. (hook ciathangers using a wrapping paper inner, coathangers had different points)
5) Archery target, (throwing balls into plant pot target...ice cream tubs would do)
6)Tower race, home made board game based on snakes and ladders (Trap doors down, secret passage up)
[and a few more]
I borrowed a friends son age 14 to keep the boys on order (£10 tip)
The grand feast was mainly iceland MealDeal/Bogof, with £10 off £40 spend (the other half of the shop is kept for my 4yr old's birthday next week.
Cake: Castle Sqare tin, quick frost icing, Mini rolls in each corner, chocolate fingers broken in half and pressed in along upper edges to make the ramparts. Jelly baboes sword foghting with cocktail sticks and flags (sticky labels on cocktails sticks) on the turrets.
Party bags? ballons, sweets and their shield. Had to be under £40 all in
(but it did take a lot of time).
Now for my next son next week.0 -

bumping this up as someone asked about birthdays on the families board. We had a great time but I dont think parents are used to having 'home' parties. Maybe I made them feel guilty;)Member no.1 of the 'I'm not in a clique' group :rotfl:

Why on earth would other parents feel guilty
Sounds like most parties round here for 4 year olds or come to that very similar to what my daughter had at 14 except for the addition of freebie face packs..0
