  • Welcome back. It sounds like you've had a lovely holiday. I've always wanted to go to Italy so I'm very jealous. ;) Well done on your op. :T

Thanks MG :) It had been on my list of wanting to go to for many years. It was worth the wait and I recommend it.
  • Pleased you've had a lovely holiday, did you read lots of books?
I can't wait for our next break away, I'm going to attempt to read some classics, I've never really read them As I didn't study English past GCSE.

    Hi Wish - thanks :)

No I only read one book as the trip was a guided tour and so there wasn't much time to read really. I probably read most on the plane going out and back than any other time.

The only thing I would say about classics, is find those by an author whose style you enjoy and then you will devour them as much as a newer book. Of course it's all subjective as some alleged classics, I can't get on with and others I have loved.

Do you have long to wait for your break?

Well I survived my first day back.... :p It actually wasn't too bad a day. I just hope the rest of the week continues in the same vein!

Took my leftover currency back today and got a pretty decent rate back on it. I was tempted to OP it but have decided to use it to pay off the cc - so will be able to say now that the holiday really didn't cost me any more than I already budgeted for in advance :)

    No other money news

As someone with a degree in English Literature, I would be wary of the 'classics'. Perhaps I am just cycnical as I look back to my 4 year stint of reading 30-40 classics a year ;)

BW makes a great point - find an author that you enjoy and then binge read!

Also, if you make a mistake and pick a dud, move on, life is too short for bad books. Most of the time the relief of escaping a dull read will more than make up for the risk of missing a great book that it takes some time to get into. I'd make an exception for Dickens, he takes some getting used to (and is best read in winter)...

    Hi Mr E

It probably won't come as a surprise (given my name ) that I also have a degree in English Lit

I totally agree with you about life being too short for dud books. After being 'forced' to read books I didn't enjoy for uni, I definitely subscribe to the view now that if I don't enjoy it... ditch it! :D Have to say I disagree with you about Dickens though...it's one author I just can't get on with. Feel free to have my share of those :p

Glad you had a good holiday.

No degree, but an O Level in English Lit - and I remember how much I disliked reading books that I 'had' to read.

These days, I rarely give up on a book, but I normally select them carefully, so it should be something I like.

I'm quite partial to a Dickens from time to time

    Thanks Goldie :)
  • Thanks for the tips, I am most definitely a binge reader (and a binge watcher of box sets too) but my usual genre is crime and action books, usually involving the cia or some other intelligence outfit.

I also ditch books that don't hold my interest within a couple of chapters, life is too short to waste on a dud book.
