I can tell you that it will look worse than now if you have no experience in using a rattle can.
Your prep work is going to be key, and the color you have on that car is as bad as black for showing every imperfection in your prep work because its dark plus metallic.
Every piece of exposed metal work exposed by stripper and sanding is going to need sealer primer, high build primer is NOT going to seal it, you WILL neeud an epoxy primer to seal the metal work to prevent rust. exposed plastic such as a bumper will need a plastic adhesive coating or the paint will blister and peel off.
If you do intend on tackling this yourself, with rattle cans, bear in mind that any mistake you make will devalue further the resale cost of the car.
This, I would take random people's opinion on diy spray painting with a pinch of salt. You have no idea who they are and their idea of a "good" job could be what you regard as looking like a shed
Having diy painted stuff in the past, iI could never get it right. I wasted weekends sanding, spraying, notchingthe job aand then sanding and spraying again. Until I took out too much of the surface and became too weak so I had to throw the panel out.
Glossy Metallica are hard to match, it takes a pro a lot of practice to get right and a diy attempt will look Crap.
Either pay a pro to paint it or buy panels from breakers0 -
Good advice for any tribute band, tbh.londonTiger wrote: »Glossy Metallica are hard to match, it takes a pro a lot of practice to get right and a diy attempt will look Crap.0 -
Your car is was silver vw golf correct, you made it hard on yourself because A. for the right shade of silver you need the right shade of primer to achieve the correct shade of silver to begin with. black primer=more layers of metallic silver but you achieve a dark silver metallic, brown primer you achieve lighter shade, grey primer it goes a bit lighter, and white will make it light, white is more commonly used on VW light metallic silver B you need things to be pefect in the prep in order to achieve a streak free scratchless job, C using a generic or alfuds mixed up paint can doesn't give you the best match because of the metallic pigments need to be measured and weighed silver is hard to mix for amateur mixer in alfud plus they used pre mix bottles metallic comes in a packet like glitter and needs to be weighed, so for a proper match take a body panel to a paint specialist who will mix it like they do in a body shop from scratch using the flakes of metallic and proper paints. D leaving it too long between base and clear can ruin the job, when I have baked/cured the base I apply the lacquer ASAP. E youll never achieve a glossy lacquer layer out of a can the pressure and amount coming out will either be too thin or too thick, I tend to layer it bit by bit then let it dry 48 hours come back and wet sand 1200 grit and cut it back polich it up and looks decent.londonTiger wrote: »This, I would take random people's opinion on diy spray painting with a pinch of salt. it took a while for me to get the hang of prep and painting with rattle cans but now I can paint out of a rattle can and have it look good.0 -
Well it seems like I shall just have to pay someone to spray it. I dont think I can do it to a good quality.0

to add to your worries ..
I heard the perfect paint attack is done twice ..the second attack done one day after you had your resprayed car back ...
My advice park the car somewhere you can see it ..or somewhere with a camera on it.0 -
Well I was very pleased with the results I got from rattle cans on the merc. I'd say try it and see; you haven't got much to lose.0

Yes i now don't park close to my house, I have to walk for a couple of minutes now!0 -
each time you park up outside yourhouse after repairing it, put a big sign in the windscreen saying "SMILE YOUR ON HD CCTV WITH NIGHT VISION" should deter a second attack...0

Encourage an attack by roaming grammar pedants, more like.atrixblue.-MFR-. wrote: »put a big sign in the windscreen saying "SMILE YOUR ON HD CCTV WITH NIGHT VISION" should deter a second attack...0
