I only worry fi the rust actually makes it structurally weak.
This will not affect the structure.

So what will be the issue? Resale value?

TBH it does not look that bad.

used brake fluid with eat away paint and that is free after a diy brake service
  • Clean up and rattle can it my opinion, some very good colour matches available on Ebay. Yes, it might not match 100%, but will be better then a line of rust!

I had severe lacquer peel on the bonnet of my Mercedes such that it looked like it had been attacked with paint stripper. However a little rubbing down, spray with a paint can, followed by a lacquer can; followed by G3 and wax two weeks later and it looks reasonable again. Total cost of materials £15.

Try a small area if you are unsure and see how it goes.

SO at the end of the day it will cost me a lot of money. The car is only a 2006 ford fiesta 1.4 worth about 2700 quid. Its 100% Nitromors as it is green and thick. Its eaten away at the top paint which is metallic single lines. So if it is left the metal will start to rust?

A few searches on Autotrader will show that the car is "worth" around £1600 tops.
I would suggest leaving it out in the baking sun to thoroughly dry out the "paint remover", then hire a compressor (and spray gun) and practice a bit, before attempting a respray where needed.
You will have to sand down, barrier coat, prime and then topcoat, but that would be the most economical method for you.

    I beg to differ. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used/cars/ford/fiesta/postcode/sm26jn/radius/25/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/sort/locasc/engine-size-cars/1-4l_to_1-6l/maximum-age/up_to_8_years_old/price-to/3000/fuel-type/petrol/maximum-mileage/up_to_50000_miles

Looking at cars with the same spec and 50k miles it much more than 1400 more like 2500.

But I shall most likely do as you suggested. Thanks. It does not seem worth while doing a full respray. My main worry is the rust as the metal can be seen.
  • Ive repaired and repainted a few cars until I fell ill.

I can tell you that it will look worse than now if you have no experience in using a rattle can.

Your prep work is going to be key, and the color you have on that car is as bad as black for showing every imperfection in your prep work because its dark plus metallic.

Every piece of exposed metal work exposed by stripper and sanding is going to need sealer primer, high build primer is NOT going to seal it, you WILL need an epoxy primer to seal the metal work to prevent rust. exposed plastic such as a bumper will need a plastic adhesive coating or the paint will blister and peel off.

If you do intend on tackling this yourself, with rattle cans, bear in mind that any mistake you make will devalue further the resale cost of the car.

The important thing is to stop the corrosive fluid doing any more damage. Wash it, dry it and wash and dry it again. Otherwise it will leech through the surrounding paint and continue to etch away the metal surface. Paint with Halfords Stevie Wonder colourmatch, have it resprayed or be like a driveway dealer and embellish your poor car with stripes and motifs that will cheer up passers-by.
