How to prove no claims discount on car insurance

Does anyone know if there is a central location for accessing your own no claims discount on car insurance. I have accumulated 3 years no claims but my previous insurer will not supply proof to my new insurer thereby greatly inflating my premium. Can I access my record on a central computer somewhere? (presumably for a fee).
Thanks in advance for any advice.

To my knowledge there is no central register. That is why new insurance companies usualy ask for the "no claims issuer details" if you ask for a quote.
Why will your current/previous issuer not release details of your no claim? Also some insurers will accept just the details of the insurance company you were with and the relevant details and then contact them on your behalf - but this depends on the company you're going with...

If you got a renewal quote, it should be on there? Did the policy lapse some time ago?

    Tine, have PMed you. :)
  • Thanks for your replies.
I had to send my original proof to my previous insurer earlier this year (which was not returned) and my new insurer will not accept a photocopy. To make matters worse they refuse to contact my previous insurer direct. Sounds like I will have to contact my previous insurer again and hope common sense prevails.

I had problems last year I had 5 years no claims, 3 years of that through Norwich union, when I went with Lloyds TSB I put down 5 years NCD, they later asked prove. I asked Norwich who refused to send me prove, so I told Llloyds I dont have it, they mailed me to say that I may have my insurance revoked, I said on the phone to them, I cant prove it, I cant make Norwich union send me the prove, what more can I do? basically I told them then they can stick the insurance I will go else where as I had to prove before, they let it go. Been with them now 2 years in November

... that's pretty poor stuff if there are no other issues. Why on earth would they demand proof of no claims back?

You can't access your records but there is a central insurance database. Give your new insurers the old policy number and the company it was with and let them chase it.
  • I have a similar problem, I just took out car insurance with Privilege and I told them I have 12 years NCD, which I do. They want proof that I have 9 or more years NCD. SwiftCover will only provide proof that I am entitled to 5 or more years NCD, which is true but doesn't prove what it needs to. Why can't companies deal with absolute numbers and save everybody a lot of trouble?
I'm sure this is a new trend, up until recently I never had to give my new insurer any more than the name of my old insurer and they would obtain proof of NCD themselves, what changed?
I think Poppycat has the right idea but it stinks that that's the only way to get anywhere with these people. My girlfriend had that exact same issue with Lloyds and she resolved it in the same way too.

The central database you are refering to is the MIB it only confirms there is a policy in place if its current and is designed for the police to confirm a vehicle is covered or other Insurers / Solicitors to trace Insurers in the event of an accident. It does not note how much no claims bonus is in place so is of no use whatsoever to the OP
  • I think that with the way things are going you need to keep all renewal letters, cover statements etc rather than just last years as I used to do.

I can't recall seeing any details of NCB entitlement on any renewal or policy I've ever had in 40 years motoring. Yes, it states protected NCB if you are entitled to and have paid for that, but haver never seen the No of years stated.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
