How to prove no claims discount on car insurance

    I always insist an insurance company sends me a letter saying

    Your policy ending xx/xx/xxxx you had accrued XX years no claims. Where XX is accurate and not based on that insurers current maximum.

    All insurers I have been with have always sent the standard letter on renewal saying

    Your policy ended xx/xx/xxxx with 5 years NCB or 6 years NCB (for the ones who go to 6)

    But I know that some insurers go to 8, 9, or more years Co-Op, Frizzel etc and one year they might have the best renewal quote, but you can't get it unless you have a renewal letter which states XX years instead of the standard letter. Places like Compare.com have NCB columns going up to 25 years . My current figure is 15 years. Never accept the letter which just tells you "maximum", or "5 years max" or "6 years max" - because you are cutting yourself off from getting the cheapest quotes across the whole of the market.
    IMPORTANT point to realise is you can only ask for letters saying XX years If you have supplied them with such a letter from your previous insurer (& make a photocopy of it & keep them for reference) If you have not supplied such a letter when you took out your policy you will have to ask them to add the number of years you have been with them onto the number of years which your letter from your previous insurer did say.

    For those of you who find your insurer has lost your NCB letter. Simple solution go back to the insurer who was before them and ask them to send you a letter stating the No. of years you left them with.

    I was trying to get Prudential to do exactly this, 1 year after I left them (to show to Co-Op) They kept sending me letters saying "5 years max NCB" despite the call centre saying I had 13 years and they would send me a letter saying "13 years", I had to ask 5 or 6 times and got 5 or 6 letters all saying "5 years Max NCB" Until finally the the supervisor in the call centre said she would write the letter herself and send it to me..... Then I got it!

    For maximum protected no claims bonus, many insurers simply state "Protected No claims bonus". This is accepted as proof of (The original Insurers) maximum no claims bonus by some insurers. The accepting Insurers often have a note of other Insurers no claims bonus scale
    so simply put protected no claims does NOT mean full no cliams.

    If you read the question I was answering (Which was from 2009), my answer was correct. In the context of the question the person asked, if he was with one of the few companies that offer protected no claims bonus for less than maximum no claims bonus they would physically state that the no claims bonus was less than maximum on the renewal notice or proof of no claims bonus.

    There are very few companies that offer protected no claims bonus for less than maximum. Feel free to have a look and report back, you will find very few that are not the same insurer white labelled

    Hi just thought I would mention that I have just transferred from Privilege Car Insurance to Direct line which is their under company because the renewal quote was over £100 more than last year!!:mad:

    I have Full claim bonus and protected for 11 years yet on my renewal from it only said 7!:( I have been driving for over 25 years and never claimed.

    I have just phoned Privilege and highlighted this because fortunately I had kept my old Marks and Spencers cancellation letter that in 2009 showed I had 9 years protected NCB. The lady explained that when I orginally filled out the quote on line it often only says 5 years NCB so they go from that, luckly I had sent in my Marks as proof and she has now simply updated their system and sent confirmation to Direct Line for me. I also asked for a written copy to be sent to me. Now thats what I call good customer service :D

    but if they had not got my Marks proof and I had not kept a copy I would be paying far more than I am already as Direct line needed 9 years or more protected which of course I have 11 now. :T

    Just shows we must read all the details and ensure they are correct x:j oh also used the 08001583965 number instead of their 0845 number worked a treat!!:beer:
