    Ditto, but with English in place of Welsh.

    Arrgh at last I think you've got it.
    Within the UK - we have England, N. Ireland, Scotland & Wales, but in any international context the answer will be Britain or United Kingdom - as others have said the passport will be a UK one not an England one, moreover in the UN the representative will have the name plate of United Kingdom.

    Now it's true that if you are in some far away land, and you get asked, 'where are you from?' you can get away with saying 'England' - any official entries would be British or UK depending on the option.

    England = English
    Great Britain = British
    United Kingdom = Kingdomish

    So I am Kingdomish.

    Or a "bit kingdom". English is a silly language.

    Or to put it another way.

    Empire = Emperor in charge.
    Kingdom = King in charge.
    Country = Cameron in charge.

    Not sure whether you're being sarcastic or really believe this nonsense. (See: Poe's Law.)

    Of course England is a country. It has clearly defined boundaries visible on just about any map that includes it. What else would it be?

    There is a lot of misinformation in this thread. The problem stems from the fact that 'nationality' does not have a fixed and unambiguous meaning. (It would have been helpful if some of the blowhards here had actually done some research before spouting off.)

    For many official purposes England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are considered one entity.

    For others, England, Wales and Scotland.

    For yet others each country is considered a separate entity.

    The problem the OP has is that he wants to use one particular definition of his nationality and that definition is not the same as the one that is relevant to the purpose of the form he needs to fill in. That's something he will have to come to terms with but that does not mean that he is wrong to state that he is English.

    No I wasnt lol

    I asked early in the thread beacuse I was generally interested in why England is a country in side another country (britain).

    Are we unique in that respect? no one has answered this

    Bedsit bob started the thread for different reasons

    Of course the idiots come out with one word replies etc for their own reasons

    From what i have read England is not recognised as a country outside of England as it fails on many counts as to what is needed to be a country.

    I have always thought we are a country and would argue with anyone who thought different, now i am not so sure

    Just received a form to register to vote.

    Went to complete it on line.

    The second question is "What is your nationality?"

    The options are:-

    British

    Irish

    Citizen of a different country

    I choose the 3rd option, and a box appeared entitled "Country name".

    I entered "England" and clicked "Continue"

    It refused to allow that, on the grounds "This is not a valid country". :mad:

    Congratulations!

    You now qualify as being too stupid to be allowed to vote.:)
