Just received a form to register to vote.
Went to complete it on line.
The second question is "What is your nationality?"
The options are:-
British
Irish
Citizen of a different country
I choose the 3rd option, and a box appeared entitled "Country name".
I entered "England" and clicked "Continue"
It refused to allow that, on the grounds "This is not a valid country".

There isn't such a thing as English nationality so they don't have to accept it, after all, do you know anyone with an English passport?0
-
No Welsh or Scottish either - but then no such thing as a Welsh or Scottish passport either.
Bit obvious really. England is a part of Great Britain.
Surprised if you are English that you never knew that !I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
The question asked was "Country name".
The reply I got was "This is not a valid country".
How the hell can England not be a valid country
Also, I tried "English" (although English, while being a nationality, isn't a country), and that was refused for the same reason.0 -
England isn't a valid country because there is no such thing as English in nationality, I always thought it was quite obvious.0

I know England is part of Great Britain, I am guessing bob does too but as per my other post what is England.
Are we unique in living in a country called England that isnt a "valid" country0 -
England is not a valid country name to answer in that field. That doesn't mean it isn't a country. We all should have known the correct answer is British0

You appear to be one of those unfortunate people (of whom there seem to be a good quantity here) who are able to infer 'obviousness' from a complete misunderstanding of a situation.
Of course there is such a country as England and such a nationality as English.
The fact that there is also a recognise nationality: 'British' does not change that fact.
Neither does the fact that some entity that does not need to know from which part of Britain you derive your British nationality and thus does not accept it on an on-line form.
Of course, this is just sloppy and lazy programming on the part of the council. It should accept any of the component parts of 'Britain' and then record the answer as if it had been 'Britain'.There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
They buy in data sets that provide the options - in Scotland I've had this option rejected as I need to find out what the alternatives are, UK, a United Kingdom, GB, Great Britain etc.
Same too where they insist I enter my County, and present a list of counties that were last active in 1964 and not the one I'm in now.
Still with the upcoming Independence referendum just 8 weeks away, I do hope we can do something to resolve the issue, as following a YES vote, all Country lists may well be updated as 'rUK' for E&W is not on.
But it might take until 2042 before your wish is granted.0 -
Your national identity is English. Your nationality is British.:footie:
