  • The risk of your bed setting on fire would be somewhat less than the risk of a car.

I saw an empty car at a service station set on fire once- it was horrific. Smoke to full flame in minutes. Houses have fire alarms- cars dont and even if it did have would a parent be able to get back in time?
I have never yet seen a car spontaneously set fire, while turned off

Hang on, the phrase was 'set on fire' so there was no need for insults.

This happened to a neighbour of mine-had brought the kids in and ten minutes later the car went up- The fire brigade reckoned it was an electrical fault.

She had a baby and a toddler and was very shaken up by it .
I once nursed my overheating car home (or tried to) it too went up in flames (the engine was turned off at the time as I was trying to cool it down). It does happen .

    Yet I have-twice
Not a risk I'd like to take with any child of mine.
Life is a risk but there is avoidable risk and unavoidable risk. Only the "idiotically stupid" would expose their child to avoidable risk surely when a safer alternative is readily available with only small effort ?

Bit OT but I once gave a German driver the fright of his life. At a time when PIRA were actively bombing British barracks on the continent, the poor fellows car overheated and he pulled into the first place he thought was safe too. I see a civilian car pulling into the barrracks entrance and the driver run out with smoke starting to appear from the engine bay. The last thing he expected to hear was "Halte! oder Ich schießen".

We did get the fire put out and got him towed to a local garage by our reccy mecs but I still feel a bit of sympathy for him 30 years later.

How do people feel if baby is napping inside and mum or dad are in the back garden? Does that mean baby us alone, the nspcc rules are very rigid, babies should never be left alone? What about at night when they are sleeping, are they alone then? Would the posters that said they would call Social Servises call them if they saw parents out in their garden whilst baby was asleepn the house?

Or to quote another parent "It's just like having a dinner party in the garden when the children are in bed" People's risk perception varies even if they are a GP.

As for the scenario above -surely that would depend what the parents were doing in the garden - pulling a few weeds and popping in to check on the child at regular intervals or getting off their faces on drink or drugs. What about if the parent was alone in the garden and was electrocuted by a lawn mower or was badly injured using a chain saw- you can argue most scenarios either way but can take precautions to minimize risk.

Parental instinct is a whole nother area. I as a first time mother read all the baby books , endless magazine articles- some made sense to me- some simply didn't so having educated myself on the ideas around I then used the ones that felt right for me and my child. Paternal instinct was the final decider but I'd made sure I was fully informed first and having educated myself used a mix of common sense and instinct- not instinct alone. I don't think I was unusual.

Agree. A mother might 'instinctively' think it's ok to swap to cows milk as their main drink before 1, instead of formula/breastmilk, because it's cheaper and the same thing really. No it's not! A bit of research would show that it not nutritionally the same, it can upset their tummies and it's higher in salt, meaning you could easily go over their maximum daily salt allowance.

I prefer being a well informed mummy, rather than relying on instincts.

However there are exceptions as not all babies are the same .
A friend of mine was born at term and howled the hospital down - wouldn't sleep (this was in the days when Mums stayed a week in hospital after the birth as a matter of course). She was feeding well but simply didn't sleep and was inconsolable. An older midwife came on duty - and said "That child is starving- mixed some baby rice in a bottle and fed the child. Who then slept for 24 hours straight. (As an adult she was one of the most placid people I know so I don't think it was down to temperament)
Against all advice - even back then - but was right for that particular child.
New Mums tend to read the books like they are manuals and don't always consider that "the norm" is a huge range - and that despite many different ideas over the years -most things do work - just some suit some babies better than others.
