You've said that your second child was born 14 years ago. And while back to sleep was promoted then, it probably wasn't as understood as well. I really don't think that your anecdote negates current advice.

And in respect of your comment on digestive and allergy issues, surely it's in adults that this rise (if there is one) is seen, adults who were probably weaned early, not babies who have been weaned according to current guidelines.

If my LO has a baby, I will be advising her to follow the safe sleep guidelines that exist at the time. I will not be saying 'well in my day we did this', as though there can be no advances in medical knowledge.

My GP friend said that a lot of digestive problems are currently being seen in adults of 35-50 years, so early weaning might seem ok, but could be to blame for conditions that show up later in life!

I agree with you afa anecdotes. When mine were babies you could prepare formula and store it for 24 hours made up, now they have discovered it's safer to prepare as you go. Even though mine were ok with the advice 16 years ago, I would never practise that now!!

I would never leave a dog unattended in a car so I am staggered people do so with their children, "monitored" or not!
Tough if people don't like it that's my view and nothing is going to change it.

New "advice" appears on a regular basis. I just think back to when babies were born before formula milk and baby monitors, when people weaned babies when they thought it was the right time, not when some child care book said they should. How on earth did people manage ? Quite well apparently.

My view is that the problems seen in adults now are probably more to do with their diet than early weaning.

Flashback to 1974, when we had a Britax baby seat for No 2 son - who was 18 months old. He'd fallen asleep in the car and DH was unloading the things that we'd shopped for, and I was putting them away. DH turned away to talk to our neighbour who was in his garden. No 2 son woke up, undid the buckle on the carseat and climbed into the front, released the (sloppy) handbrake ...and the car rolled forward and crashed into the garage door!

OK - so I know that the car seats today are more "baby proof" - but it shows how quickly a situation can change.

But they didn't do quite well, infant (and adult) mortality was much higher than it is now.

Have you got the scientific data to back up that opinion? It always amazes me that people are so quick to dismiss peer reviewed, respected scientific research (presumably without even reading it)

It's new advice because it's been researched! Not just because someone feels like updating it!

Before formula milk, babies dies. Before correct advice babies were more likely to suffer medical complications through incorrect preparation and storage of formula feeding. There have been childcare books around for decades! Parents have been following advice via these books for decades!

I would think the studies are proof enough that early weaning can be the cause of the rise in conditions such as IBS, Crohns etc... This is because the gut should be kept pure for at least 6 months.

I'm glad medical advise it updated. And really think anyone with a brain would accept such advice from the WHO and suchlike when it comes to thinks like weaning, feeding etc.
  • I'm sure there's an irony that a car caught fire last night and set fire to two houses .. and it was only a few streets from me.

Babies have also died since formula milk was introduced, babies who are breastfed die, for all sorts of reasons. Parents have also ignored "advice" from childcare books for decades.

"Anyone with a brain" would understand that childcare books and advice from WHO and suchlike is not the be all and end all of bringing up your child.

What you fail to see is that other people have their own opinions on bringing up children. Resorting to insults just because someone doesn't agree with your views is very immature.

You missed the point completely with that reply! With respect I won't read an article from the daily fail, I prefer to get my knowledge and understanding from more reliable sources.

Nowhere did I say it was the be all and end all, just that intelligent parents would hopefully research current advice and make an informed decision based on that research. I am not insulting anyone, I am having an opinion on the subject.

The same article appeared on the BBC News website at the same time, here it is. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-12180052

You'll find it is based on medical research. A bit narrow minded not to read it just because it was in the Daily Mail.
