Might be a stupid question, but are standing orders, which I set up, as valid as DDs which I've agreed to but in reality come from a firm, such as Npower or Debenhams?

A Standing Order is very different to Direct Debit, and Halifax require Direct Debits for the monthly fiver. You will not get the fivers if you do not have 2 monthly paying DDs. It doesn't matter who the DDs pay to, or how much they pay.

Thanks. I've just decided to contribute to Amnesty International, anyway, so will do that as well as Oxfam.

The easiest way to do is to set up Saving account which allow you to pay by DD. There is a thread dedicated for this

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4168667

Many people here are using Tesco Instant Access Saving and Tesco Interner Saver. THe beauty of it as you just you could set up a lot of direct debit to feed this saving account and it is guaranteed that it will pay each month. It will just takes you a few minutes to set it up.

Donating to charity is a good thing but the danger of it if you rely on this for the thing like this is if it is below their threshold, they might refuse to collect it as it also costs them a little to collect/set it up the DD.

I have just switched a Barclays account that I no longer use. It should be complete by 8th August. Got a bit concerned part way through that it didn't mention switching at all and Id done something wrong, but right at the end it asked me for Barclays account details so all is well. Thank op. £100 will come in nicely right now.

As usual? It's never been paid on the 1st of the month...always at the end of the first working day of the month. Invariably, this means you'll see it in the early hours of the 2nd working day of the month.

Where there's a weekend and a Bank Holiday involved the payment might not be made until the 4th of the month.

What's probably confused you is that if you've checked your previous statements the payment is always shown backdated to the 1st of the month.

Yep that's what it would be, looking back through my online banking it shows on the first if it's a Monday-Friday but the next Monday if the first is a weekend

Would it be possible to open a new standard current account else where then switch to Halifax for the bonus?

My other question is, how long does the Halifax account need to be open before switching again to another bank?
