Hugh Bandwidth...Is It Gaming

Hi,
My bandwidth has gone through the roof over the past few months. I couldn't figure out why but have discovered that my kids have been using their XBox360 online for up to 10 hours/day, often not switching it off when going out!
Does anyone know how many MB/Hr. these games use. Also could anyone tell me how much PC online gaming uses?
Many thanks,
D

  • Bandwidth is the measure of speed of your broadband connection so I assume you just mean lots of data has been transfered? How are you getting this information?

It's difficult to say how much Xbox or PC games use because it depends on the individual game and how much data it needs to exchange for the game play. Having said that I've not come across many that use tons of data per hour simply because they need to be playable on lower speed or shared connections.

If you're concerned that you're getting close to your ISP's monthly limits I'd also look elsewhere for the source of this as on their own I've never met anyone who's maxed out just on games. Music / video downloads, P2P or similar might be prime suspects.

Check your router config screens, many give an indication of useage, and make sure it is secure if wireless.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Does your isp have a usage chart, this may show you how much.

Online gaming uses very little. Most games only transfer a couple of kilobytes per second. The more info they send/receive in games, the laggier and less responsive it would be whilst it waits for the info so games keep data traffic to a minimum.

WHAT DOES HAMMER DOWNLOAD LIMITS is downloading demos and trailers off Xbox Live! Some of these are up to 1.5GB each with the average being several hundred MBs.

The closest figure i ever got quoted was about 750 mb a night (of intensive gaming )..it does depend on the game your playing .
I have had my ten meg line capped by virgin for to much up/down load ...Kids and me playing on line games on 3 p.c's is enough to set their bells ringing .

    Hi,
You may be right Conor the 360 does have quite a few demos and I think 34 arcade games.
Reluctant Spender, yes my isp ,idnet, does have a chart.
Albertross; My router is not wireless and doesn't have a config screen that would tell me (as far as I know).
Monkey tennis; I recently had to re-instal XP so I doubt that there are bugs but there have been some music and P2P files down loaded.

No-one is downloading/streaming long videos and also, I'm trying to watch what is happening by using net meter yet the figures I'm getting are 14GB for June and 13GB for May. Thankfully I've not been billed...yet?

    Many thanks everyone,
    D
