Piglet to Gazelle - My weight loss journey

  • Thanks Bluebell68 for your confidence and kind words.
My target is 8st 7lbs as according to my GP is bang in the middle of my prefered weight range for my height (I'm 5ft exactly). Before my thyroid died I was around a stone lighter than that, but then I was 18.
I am taking it slow as in the end I am trying to completely overhaul a lifetime of bad eating habits and an unhealthy attitude to food.

I actually for the first time opened up about my attitude to food to my mum and it really felt like a weight had been lifted. Sorry about the bad pun.

Take that with a major pinch of salt

Im 11 stones 11 but Im a size 14 and Im not tall. I workout hard and Ive lost inches when Ive not been losing weight.

Id look ill at 8 stones whereas my mum who is the same height as me is 8 stones 10 and looks fine, we have different body types

Im planning to get to 10 stones 10 and maybe 10 stones in time, but the height weight charts as far as Im concerned are a load of nonsense, you want to be keeping a chart of your inches which you are and also your body fat percentage

I was always 9 stones 4 in my teens, Im now 45, but to get to 8 stones 7 like the height weight charts said I should be Id have had to starve myself

Im five foot one and a half, people dont believe me when I tell them what I weigh, I dont look it.

If your body wants to settle at lets say 10 stones and you look fine at that, great.

Just bear in mind that both height and weight charts and BMI have limitations.
  • I've been trying to lose weight all these time but unfortunately I can't control myself from eating high calories food...

I also have the same problem with you, got diagnosed with an underactive thyroid at my age 20, I'm taking daily hormone-replacement tablets called levothyroxine.

I envy you because you are able to control your cravings, hope I can too! :(

    Hi purpleshoes,

I have that in my head as a flexi goal. At the end of the day it needs to be a figure that I can maintain and that I also feel/look healthy at. I have had a look at BF percentage but not sure how to measure it accurately looking at this blog I am somewhere between the two last pictures for women. http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2012/07/02/body-fat-percentage/
and I am aiming for the look of the 20-21% pic to me this looks a healthy.

Its how your clothes feel and how you look that matters. I remember my bootcamp instructor saying a few months ago, the scales might say people are obese but if you look good in your clothes and you feel good, thats what matters.

I think you would be better taking your goal 7 pounds at a time and then perhaps tweaking it when you get to 10 stones if you feel you need to, because if you are exercising a lot you will look different to someone at 10 stones who is doing nil exercise.

Its easy to get demotivated when you have a fair amount that you want to lose.

Most electronic scales will also give you a body fat percentage figure as well as your weight.

Don't be too disheartened I used to be in exactly the same boat as you. I would either eat the things I shouldn't be and try to convince myself that I hadn't eaten them or think why can't I eat it and be slim. It's not fair, and then eat it, and then feel awful after. Most of the time even when I wasn't hungry.
The toughest part is being honest with yourself and realising what you are doing and why. Even now I still have those urges occasionally but I recognise them now.

I started just making small changes to my diet slowly at first, I found that easier than making a drastic change. Try using My Fitness Pal, log your food and drink for a week eating as you would normally and then look back and see what you would be happy to change for the following week.

Just before my wedding I got down to 10st 4lbs doing slimming world at 1200 cals I was doing mostly cardio and aerobics (or are they the same thing?) and then I plateaued at this. I still wasn't happy with the way my shoulders and arms looked but then I will be doing more strength training this time round. I personally think I would be more comfortable around the 9st mark but I will have to see when I get there.
At the moment my goal is just to get under the 11st mark but definitely a good suggestion regarding smaller goals. A bit like the 'I can make it to the lamppost' when you are carrying heavy shopping bags.
