A report about this is coming up on Radio 4 any time soon (like now, 12:25)
[edit] but don't all race to the 'listen again' - no more information than you'd find in the Belfast Telegraph (first news story I hit on Google) - 'some problems, but generally all went very well, will be sorted out in a month or so, cars with tax due being prioritised etc etc.'
Was only a 5 minute slot - 12:24 to 12:29.0 -

I used the V5 number (which their system will recognise) as the V11(NI) number is, as you say, too long. I tried dropping numbers from the start of it, the end. None worked.
All went through on the V5 number without a hitch and the disc showed up in the post 3 days later.
I just renewed mine the same way (V5 number) and, after much trepidation, found it surprisingly easy. :beer:0 -
Oh and thanks bingo bango, if not for your post I wouldn't have known about the V5 number.

This was quoted from the English transport minister and I can believe it as it will be part of the record. However this should have been identified as a potential compatibility issue and obviously wasn't picked up.northernireland10 wrote: »NAR where did you get this information from? As far as I remember the colours on the NI system was a drop down the clerk could only put in certain colours. Is this info from DVLA? Blaming NI and DVA again after it seems very obvious that the problem relates to the Swansea system not being tested very well for compatibility.0 -
I've done two cars online using the V5 number and registration, both went through straight away thankfully.0

Does anyone have any experience of taxing a car late online?
Have jsut returned from holiday and realised this morning that the tax was due 1st Aug - never received a reminder...is this all to do with the new online system?
Anyway, will sort when I get home this evening - I see from a few responses it can be done without reminder reference, but if its overdue is this still the case?
thanks

You can tax it online now. But you should not use the vehicle without displaying a valid disc.
You use the log book reference if you dont have the reminder reference.
The grace period is only valid if you renew before it expires. Safer to goto the post office.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

I just bought a car from a dealer, I phoned several days ago to get the insurance changed over to the new car, car has a valid MOT, but I can't tax it as it won't let me do it online or over the phone with the new keeper part of the V5 certificate. I now have to wait for the new insurance certificate to arrive before I can get it taxed at the post office. Why is it only for vehicles in Northern Ireland that we need to provide the insurance certificate? Also, I believe it can take up to 7 days for the insurance database to update, even though I changed the insurance several days ago it's still showing as uninsured.0

Won't your Insurance let you print the certificate?
I bought a new car last week, called AXA to change car and was then able to download the certificate within 10 minutes.
With the printed Insurance certificate and the new Keepers part of the V5 I was able to tax the car without any problems at the local Post Office.0
